Publisher's Summary

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones - one of the greatest switch-hitters in baseball history - shares his remarkable story while capturing the magic nostalgia that sets baseball apart from every other sport.

Before Chipper Jones became an eight-time All-Star who amassed Hall of Fame-worthy statistics during a 19-year career with the Atlanta Braves, he was just a country kid from small-town Pierson, Florida. A kid who grew up playing baseball in the backyard with his dad, dreaming that one day he'd be a major league ballplayer.

With his trademark candor and astonishing recall, Chipper Jones tells the story of his rise to the MLB ranks and what it took to stay with one organization his entire career in an era of booming free agency. His journey begins with learning the art of switch-hitting and takes off after the Braves made him the number one overall pick in the 1990 draft, setting him on course to become the linchpin of their lineup at the height of their 14-straight division-title run.

Ballplayer takes listeners into the clubhouse of the Braves' extraordinary dynasty, from the climax of the World Series championship in 1995 to the last-gasp division win by the 2005 "Baby Braves", all the while sharing pitch-by-pitch dissections of clashes at the plate with some of the all-time great starters, such as Clemens and Johnson, as well as closers such as Wagner and Papelbon. He delves into his relationships with Bobby Cox and his famous Braves brothers - Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, among them - and opponents from Cal Ripken Jr. to Barry Bonds. The National League MVP also opens up about his overnight rise to superstardom and the personal pitfalls that came with fame; his spirited rivalry with the New York Mets; his reflections on baseball in the modern era - outrageous money, steroids, and all; and his special last season in 2012.

Ballplayer immerses us in the best of baseball, as if we're sitting next to Chipper in the dugout on an endless spring day.

Affirmation

Affirmation

Growing up in Philadelphia, a die hard Philadelphia sports fan, it's absolutely asinine that my favorite baseball player of all time played every last game of his MLB career for the Atlanta Braves. Sacrilege really. I wore my pants high like Chipper. I wore number 10 like Chipper. I modeled my approach at the plate after Chip's right handed approach and swing. He's an absolute legend. And I thank you for giving fans like myself a glimpse into the struggles, successes, heart aches and milestones that came along with becoming one of the greatest ball players to ever toe the diamond. Can't recommend this enough.

Thank you, 10.

Thanks Chipper!

As a native Atlantan who moved away, Atlanta will always be home. This was such a great reminder of the 90s in Atlanta, the Braves, the Olympics and the making of several hall of famers including Chipper. The greatest switch hitter in history! Thanks Chipper for the memories, sharing your shortcomings and the making of a hall of famer. Great story!

Ballplayer

I chose a 5 star on this book. I really enjoyed the authentic style of how the story of Chipper was delivered. The chapters of his boyhood and minor league life were amazing. I recommend it to any baseball fan.

Chipper is the Face of the 14 Year Braves Dynasty

The Atlanta Braves captured 14 consecutive division titles and five World Series.

Soon to be inducted at Cooperstown, Chipper Jones, was the face of this tremendous Braves Dynasty that also featured three incredible Hall of Fame pitchers, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz.

The Man, The Myth, The LEDGEND!

This is a great view into a ballplayer I grew up with's life. Hearing how he felt about certain things and not holding anything back was awesome. We look up to our hero's and every now and then we get pulled back to earth to find out they are human. Chipper is human and it is great to know Hero status is attainable through hard work and desire. Thank you CHIPPER JONES!

No holds barred look into the life of Chipper

read the book twice and now listening. The only thing I'd change, and it's a lot to ask, is that the entire book was narrated by Chipper. The narration is great I just think it would have been better in his voice.

The best!

I cannot believe I cried listening to this book.. multiple times. And laughed out loud on several occasions, looking like a weirdo in my car by myself 😂. A lot more emotion than you’d expect from a sport book. Loved the stories, love reminiscing about things I remember and saying ‘I was there for that’, or ‘I remember that game’. Love Chipper #10
Thank You for this book!
