"With excessive exposure to flashing, changing screens, children are having a hard time settling their brains. Their thinking is fragmented and their focus is fractured. In Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo: Breathing In The Calm, Kim Larkins cleverly and creatively invites children into an animal-friendly story line of learning how to calm themselves. Although Larkins addresses worry, Emma Lou is a valuable tool for releasing stress throughout the nervous system, induced from screen stimulation." (Holli Kenley, author of Power Down & Parent Up)

Nice tale about coping with anxiety and worry

I really appreciate what this author is trying to do, it’s wonderful that she’s trying to help children cope with their anxiety and worry about every day life. The part when Emma Lou actually learns coping mechanisms is wonderful! I just would have preferred more time was spent on that aspect. Most of the book sets up Emma Lou’s worries and how her acquaintances don’t understand why she acts the way she does. This is a great thing to teach children about as well, I just would have preferred it to be a smaller part of the book and the coping mechanisms were more of the focus. The book also touches on hyperactivity with Emma Lou’s best friend and how the same coping styles can work for that as well. The narrator did a great job. Overall, great, age appropriate book for kids with worries and anxiety. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

A great listen!

I got this audiobook via a promo code and this is my voluntary review.

My mother recently got a small yorkie for Christmas to keep her company and all her grandkids love him, so this story about a small dog with her big worries seemed like a good fit for story time. They really enjoyed the illustrations in the ebook, and we ended up with a fridge full of puppy pictures. I really enjoyed the underlaying messages about taking a deep breath and following mindfulness. A wonderful mental health message in these anxiety blood pressure rising times. The kids really loved the story and there were plenty of animal friends like Caleb the calico cat, Patrick the pig, and Gigi the ginormous giraffe to help fuel their imaginations.

Barbara Rich is a lovely narrator.
