Publisher's summary

Based on real historical events.

A time for vengeance. German frontier: Close to the Rhine, a Roman centurion, Lucius Tullus, prepares to take his soldiers on patrol. On the opposite side of the river, German tribes are resentful of the harsh taxes about to be imposed upon them. Suspicious that there might be unrest, Tullus knows that his men's survival will be determined not just by their training and discipline, but by his leadership.

A time for war. What neither Tullus nor his commander, Governor Varus, realise is that ranged against them is the charismatic chieftain and trusted ally of Rome, Arminius, who has long been plotting to drive the Romans from the tribal lands east of the Rhine.

A time to die. As Varus' legions prepare to leave their summer encampment, thousands of warriors - directed by Arminius - are massing nearby. Eager to throw off the Roman yoke, the tribesmen prepare a deadly ambush. Only the gods can save the Romans now....

Arminius

This was my fist Ben Kane novel and man did I enjoy it. My only small critique is that I wish it showed Arminius point of view more. I'd type more but I'm jumping into book 2 right now, Hunting The Eagles, here I come.

A Great Surprise!

Very authentic, but still full of life. Real historical characters, mixed in with, the author's characters, works great! Narrator was perfect, as well!

This is as close to this kind of war as I would ever wish

Well written, well read, and setting the sides as both brave and heroic from each cultures point of view. You can’t bring civilization to barbarians without force and you can’t stay free if aren’t willing to use force. The results of this conflict are still evident today. Who really won the best outcome for their future - who can tell?

Intelligent story around an historic event

The story is based on a real historic event: the Battle of the Teutoburg. Many of the characters were also real people. Our hero though is fictional but quite believable. I like historical fiction especially when it adheres mostly to the truth. The story was good, the characters fairly well developed and the narration was excellent. Although this is book one in the series, it really stands on its own and while I recommend this I don’t feel the compulsion to read the next book. Although I will try another Roman based book.

His historical accuracy

I’ve read a lot about this event, right down to a breakdown of Legionnaires armor. He does a great job with writing a novel that accurately reflects the true events

Over 1000 Audible books, my first Ben Kane… great !

How can anyone describe a man to man combat that goes on and on, without making one over saturated with details. Without repetition and circular description ?
Talent. You sir are a writer, I am a humble reader.

Wonderful!

The narrator is perfect, The writing is an excellent balance of character development, and action packed battle scenes, all wrapped up in an ancient atmosphere. I’m hooked! Bravo!

Couldn’t finish it

Generally speaking I thoroughly enjoy historical fiction but I just could not do this one. It’s pretty uneventful

Fantastic Historical Fiction

Ben Kane is excellent at transporting the reader to a time and place with people not so different from ourselves and our motivations.
