Resumen del Editor

Five long years have passed since the annihilation of three Roman legions in the wilds of Germania. Varus, the general who led the ill-fated army, is long dead, and the bones of his 15,000 legionaries moulder in the forests. But not all the Romans were slain in the ambush. Centurion Tullus, a seasoned veteran, survived, and now he lives for revenge upon the tribal chieftain Arminius, who masterminded the ambush. Tullus will stop at nothing to kill his bitterest enemy or to recover his legion's lost Eagle.

At first, fortune seems to be with the Romans. Germanicus, the general appointed to lead punitive campaigns against the tribes, is resourceful and courageous. His armies are vast, dwarfing those of the enemy, and the initial clashes are won by the legions. Yet Arminius is far from defeated. Charismatic and determined, he gathers together thousands of warriors for a second time. Their purpose is to visit death and destruction upon Rome's legions, to repeat what was done five years before. Stalking Germanicus' forces day and night, they watch and wait for the perfect moment to strike.

Can Tullus prevent another disaster? And will he ever recover his legion's Eagle?

Excellent follow up

Continues the excellent historical fiction saga. Love the action and the violence. I couldn’t help feeling Tullus is portrayed as slightly too perfect/virtuous for the time. Rintoul is one of the best narrators I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Historical Fiction Great Fun!

I read or listed to primarily history and a great deal of Roman History. The Three books in this trigly have been a lot of fun. Based upon historical events a wonderful storyline weaves around these events with fictional characters in the Roman Legions. Listen to all three I really enjoyed them. The readers performance was great in my view.

Fantastic sequel

It did a amazing job pulling me back in immediately to Germanicus's campaign. Tullus is quickly becoming one of my favorite Protagonists in books standing side by side with Sharpe and Hornblower. I need to listen to more David Rintoul narrating. He keeps me enthralled with both drama and action. Course that enthrallment is all thanks to Ben Kane's writing.

Gripping, informative and imaginative. This is a portal into another world not as long ago as some might think.

Rome never forgets

I have read histories of this period and found them interesting but here Mr. Kane takes this history and makes it live. Here you will find well developed characters that you come to care for on both sides of the Rhine. Here is well portrayed battle and army life to fill in where the history books leave off.
