This is why there is a full modern English translation of each poem included directly after the original. There is also an extensive glossary of Scots words and their modern English equivalent included.

Daphnis and Chloe is a gem from the pen of the otherwise unknown second-century CE Greek writer Longus. It is the only work of his to survive, and little is known of him. All those women and no conflicts?
The writer focuses on Burns's adoration of each conquest - but surely this pure country lad ran into some trouble with so many ladies in the side in addition to his main squeeze(s). No angry wives? He sounds like quite the rake.
