Publisher's summary

A New York Times best seller

An important overview of the way our justice system works, and why the rule of law is essential to our survival as a society - from the one-time federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, and host of the Doing Justice podcast.

Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature.

Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

Inspiring and inspiringly written, Doing Justice gives us hope that rational and objective fact-based thinking, combined with compassion, can help us achieve truth and justice in our daily lives. Sometimes poignant and sometimes controversial, Bharara's expose is a thought-provoking, entertaining book about the need to find the humanity in our legal system as well as in our society.

Critic reviews

"Bharara positions Doing Justice as a treatise on 'the rule of law and faith in the rule of law' at a time when both are under threat. The contrast with Trump, and his contempt for the rule of law, is inevitable. Beyond simply rebutting the president, though, Bharara seeks to present the justice system Trump disdains as a source of inspiration for a healthier politics. His reflection on the role of the justice system in America is an effort both to make the inner workings of that system accessible to people unfamiliar with what criminal justice looks like from the perspective of law enforcement, and to suggest how people might apply ideals and habits honed in the courtroom to the patterns of everyday life." (The Washington Post)

"His first book, Doing Justice: A Prosecutor’s Thoughts on Crime, Punishment and the Rule of Law, takes us back to basics, asking us to reflect on what truth means when a serial liar sits in the Oval Office; what civility involves amid all the social media yelling; and how to uphold the rule of law when thuggish behaviour appears to be the order of the day.... At its most powerful, Doing Justice works as a metaphorical survival guide for the Trump era. As with everything Bharara does, he writes in a tone that is calm and considered, a warm bath after the outrage of Trump’s daily tweets.... That’s what has made him such an unlikely superstar following his dismissal at Trump’s hands." (The Guardian)

"Like the best lawyers (and writers), Preet Bharara tells a good war story. But Doing Justice is a great deal more - a vivid memoir of a critical job, a primer on the toughest questions of prosecutorial ethics, and a reminder of the drama inherent in life in the courtroom arena." (Jeffrey Toobin, author of American Heiress: The Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst)

If you're considering this book, just get it

I don't like to buy books under 13 hours, but glad I made the exception here. Very worth a credit. More to it than I thought but he still didn't change my mind about how toxic informers can't be to actually finding the truth, but I see his point of view. A thing that I thought about, after getting about half way through, was: I wish that other districts were run like his especially small districts around the country. Fair with justice the main motive.

And in case you haven't listened to him on his podcast - Stay Tuned, he has very good speaking voice, so narration was good.

Calming from the beginning.

I felt like the country will be alright after listening to this. There are good people in our justice system who are smart and care.

Surprisingly Entertaining!

I expected to be informed in an interesting manner as I listen to Preet’s podcasts. I got so much more than information out of this book. I became engaged. I am moved by the honesty. It was a reboot for me personally. I thank you for that most of all Preet.

Not as expected...but an inspiring, smooth read.

The more I learn about Preet through his podcast, media appearances, and time as former AG of SDNY the greater my respect and admiration of him grows. He is a class act...a person of true integrity and wisdom. This book is an easy read and full of stories and experiences that shape his views of the justice system. He has a way of explaining complex legal issues with ease that is digestible and thought-provoking. I appreciate his voice, especially in the current climate. He makes me proud to be an American.

Also, join his Insider podcast - it's 100% worth the small cost.

A Must Read

An insightful, ennobling, and humbling look at our system of justice by a knowledgeable and experienced prosecutor. Mr. Bharara is inspired by how the system has been conceived to ensure justice and by the men and women who work within its rules to pursue that end. Well written and organized. A timely book.
