Business magnate Willem dies at age 87, entirely alone.

Populists around the world generally cheer for such a sad fate, but his reincarnation into a world of fantasy would surely put a damper on their enthusiasm. Sword and sorcery, grand adventure, life-threatening monsters and calamities... Willem stands poised to enjoy a life of splendor.

Only, our protagonist doesn't care one whit about all of that. To him, there's only one magic: correcting an inefficient market. He long ago mastered that sorcery, and he's certainly not about to try to learn another when the old tricks work just as well in the new world. No matter how fantastical the world, one thing never changes.

Money makes the world go round.

My initial concern was that Nemorosus' story was going to be mostly focused on mercantilism which isn't one of my preferred genres; however, seeing that Daniel Wisniewski was the narrator and enjoyed his other performances, I decided to give this a try.

While there was a fair bit of mercantilism involved, that was more of a MacGuffin device than the primary emphasis of the story. No, the story really revolved around an industrialist MC upon death being Isekai's from a modern urban world, presumably Earth, to another realm where magic existed. Further complicating matters, the MC's psyche overrode that of the psyche of a rather despicable princeling. Also, the economy was closer to a pre-industrial era where product development was slow and heavily depended on manual labor. The MC's industrial background knowledge immediately led him on a quest to modernize the economy by removing inefficiencies.

He was was also wrapped-up into political intrigue from within the kingdom as well as from another slaver kingdom.

In all, I enjoyed the novel and look forward to Book 2.

Not what I expected

It’s actually really good. If you’ve been listening to a lot of action LitRPG books with a lot of fighting, then this would be a great pit stop for you to relax and listen to. It’s funny and very interesting how the character navigates his new world and how he just doesn’t care about magic. Buuuuut I wish he did care to defend himself but that’s just me. Give it a shot you’ll be happy you did.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Really fun twist on the isekai genre. Instead of chasing power or magic, the MC is basically Warren Buffet dropped into a fantasy world. He couldn’t care less about training or fighting, he just wants to exploit inefficient markets and make stacks of gold. Super sharp, full of dry humor and dad-tier puns, and totally focused on outsmarting the economy while everyone else is busy swinging swords. Don’t expect action, just top-tier competence and some very satisfying business wins.

The narrator Daniel Wisniewski does an absolute top tier job as always, and between him and the excellent writing from Nemorosus had me purchasing this audiobook before I knew a single thing about the story. If you enjoyed Jackal Among Snakes you won’t be disappointed at all.

The Art of the Fantasy Deal

This really turned out to be way better than I was initially thinking it would be. I thought it was going to be heavily focused on business, but it was more....character and story based. I really liked the MC and he got legitimate laughter out of me with all the puns and dad jokes. Surprisingly there was a few emotional moments as well. The second book I actually enjoyed a bit more considering you find out that the original Willem still exists and oddly enough wants to continue co existing with our MC. His family takes the news pretty well and all the family drama slowly starts to go away.

Unfortunately I got to the end of the 2nd book and realized that the author seems to be ending this journey. I feel this story could certainly go much further, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Truly enjoyed these 2 books and my only true complaint is that it ends way too soon. Hope there will be more, but was very enjoyable while it lasted.

Daniel is one of my fav VAs so that definitely added to my enjoyment.

I have been trying to figure out why I loved this book. What makes it stand out from the other isekai slop you clicked through before you found this book. It's the banter. The supporting characters aren't just card board cutouts. They banter with the main character, tell jokes, become the butt of jokes. The supporting characters will tease the MC, the MC will tease them back. the supporting characters will tease each other, and the MC will notice or not. The author did a fantastic job writing funny dialogue, the narrator went above and beyond in giving voice to each character.

At time of writing, this book has 15 reviews. I'm honestly shocked I came across it while doom scrolling through Audible's frankly terrible book browsing system. Still, if you've listened to Primal Hunter and thought "man, the fight scenes drag on way too long but everything else is fantastic" this is the book for you. If you are looking for what to listen to after going through Beware of Chicken, this is the book for you. If you loved the constant comedy of errors that is Overlord, this is the book for you.

Overall, low action, lots of talking. But the talking is good and the voicework is superb. I highly recommend this book. Now go away! I need to listen to the sequel.
