There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

My dog once took a bullet that was intended for me. A bullet that ripped through his chest, narrowly missing his heart, and exited through his shoulder blade. This left him unconscious on the floor of my home. Amazingly, this bullet did not kill him. Ten years ago, I adopted Blue after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you never to buy a dog on impulse.

Twisty!
I received a copy of this audio short story from the author – my thanks. I really enjoyed the story, really enjoyed the world-building that went into it. I also loved what I thought was the "gimmick", if you will, in which the entire story was basically a verbatim transcript of a psychology session police detective Dierdre Morton) Dee is required by policy to undergo following the loss of her partner. It was so well done, for the most part – economically told, with a fine balance between exposition and world-building. My only quibble was that there were a few times I was pushed away from the story, figuratively speaking, because the language was definitely that of a short story and not that of someone telling a story out loud to another person. Even I don't speak like that, and I'm weird. (Not Wyrd, though.)
The only other place where the concept fell down a bit was toward the end of the ninety minute story, when Dr. Anne Pershing mentions that over three hours have gone by. My brain hiccupped for a second, because it sure seemed like real time.
But these are quibbles. Gwendolyn Druyor's writing is lovely, funny in unexpected places and moving in other unexpected places, and always smart. And I love the idea for the series: people with unusual powers or abilities "passing" as ordinary citizens, stepping up and banding together to save the world. It's been done before, sure, but that's because it's so much fun when it's done well. As it is here.
And I love the mystery of what really happened to Kyle. And the twist in the tale… so well done. So very well done.
And I love the author's narration. I'm a fan.
I received a copy of this story in audio format directly from the author – thank you!

Quality production.
I got a code for review from a website that distributes them for that purpose.
The sound quality is great. No errors and a clean read. I think the acting was underwhelming. Author is the narrator so I get saving money and doing it yourself and it wasn’t horrible at all it just could have been a little better.
I enjoyed this until the big ending scene, I felt that there were simply way too many paranormal characters packed into the bar. And the place should have been leveled.
The main character and her therapist were good and I enjoyed all of the banshee stuff.
4 stars
If the other books didn’t look to be the same night from other viewpoints I probably would listen to another but... this one was enough for me.

Follow me down the rabbit hole...
Some authors write in a rather One dimensional universe, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but as I dive into Gwendolyn Druyor's books, I've discovered that her envisioned universe is much, much more than that!
If you follow me down the rabbit hole which Druyor has dug for us, you'll see that one story follows a Were-human, while another has a tooth fairy, and then this particular story (Dee), is from a Banshee's point of view... A Banshee who happens to be a cop! Best of all, the books I've read are complete stand-alones, but if you read just one, I expect that you're gonna be hooked, and you'll soon feel the need to read Druyor's other, delightfully "wyrdo" books!
And Gwendolyn Druyor's voice acting is fantastic...

Short Story
It was my first book by Gwendolyn Druyor. This is the first book in the Wyrdos Tale. This is a short story, interesting, captivating and strange. The story is well written and the storyline is fast-paced and intriguing. The narration is great and easy to listen. I love Gwendolyn Druyor's voice. Who needs super hero's when you have Dee
I really enjoyed Gwendolyn Druyor's shifter school, where we caught a glimpse of the Wyrdos, so was really glad to see a few of the characters had there own storylines. Gwendolyn sure doesn't disappoint she packs so much In such a short amount of time, just wish it had been longer. It is a very cleverly crafted tell that will have you wanting the rest of the series. The characters are unique and very interesting, who else can weave a story with a Banshee, Brownies, the Bogeyman and dragons and not make it weird. Off to start the next book.
Dee is a cop and she has a secret that only her partner knows. She is also a Banshee. Being a cop she sees a lot of death but how does she cope with it and stop it from taking a toll on herself, especially when she for sees the death of her partner and her only real friend. A man who had secrets. Can she track down his killer? Save herself and the city at the same time?
Gwendolyn is one of my favourite narrator's (and fast become one of my favourite authors too). She just has a way with words that no one else can copy.

Story
John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it. He's obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn't want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation. Dead bodies are normal to John. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat - and to appreciate what that difference means.
