Publisher's Summary
A gruesome war results in the old gods' departure from earth. The only remnants of their existence lie in two girls. Twins, separated at birth. Goddesses who grow up believing that they are human. Daughters of Nri explores their epic journey of self-discovery as they embark on a path back to one another.
Strong-willed Naala grows up seeking adventure in her quiet and small village. While the more reserved Sinai resides in the cold and political palace of Nri. Though miles apart, both girls share an indestructible bond: they share the same blood, the same face, and possess the same unspoken magic, thought to have vanished with the lost gods.
The twin girls were separated at birth, a price paid to ensure their survival from Eze Ochichiri, the man who rules the Kingdom of Nri. Both girls are tested in ways that awaken a mystical, formidable power deep within themselves. Eventually, their paths both lead back to the mighty Eze. But can they defeat the man who brought the gods themselves to their knees?

The potential to be a good story but the pace is unbearable
It’s clear the author intended to write this story in multiple books from the very beginning which significantly diminishes the quality of the story because the characters develop so slowly. After listening for more than 10 hours I realized it would never pick up and found myself listening only when I could stand it just to be done. The main characters are written in a naive way, unsure of themselves, likely so they can blossom in the next book. There is a very minimal love story that quickly becomes boring because it doesn’t go anywhere. Admittedly I may not be the target audience. This story would be great for a 12 year old, but it quickly becomes tedious for an adult.

Interesting concept
I liked the story/summary for this novel, thus the reason why I purchased it, however I'm not sure how to express what I felt about this entire story. It was like...it was so busy and there was so much going on...yet at the same time I felt the story didn't move very fast. I wanted to like this novel, but grew frustrated at times with scenes that could have been quickly mentioned instead of making what felt like too many chapters to me. Sometimes there was too much character building and yet the 2 sisters doing get to meet each other until the last chapter....
Weruche Opia did a nice job story telling with her accent, but I really needed to increase the speed of the narrator's voice in order to get through the book. because it sounded too slow for me.

Good but could have been great
I loved the narrator.
The premise of the book was good, it was slow going and at times annoying. The main characters were slow to grasp their true nature and that made it difficult to finish the book. The ending was anti climatic and unsatisfactory. I imagine a sequel must be in the works and I hope it moves faster and the main characters grow.

The tell of two champions
A well written story that keeps you captivated. You really want to see how it ends. It’s a perfect two strand tell that comes together in the end. I really enjoyed the African village vs. the grand palace and two ladies that live so different but the same. This book is a great read for teens and young adults.

that was a horrible way to end the book
it's as if you just got tired of writing the book and decided to just end it after they achieved the "impossible". until then the book was good and the story was enjoyable...but then you rush the ending and just end it abruptly 😤😤

Good effort
I enjoyed the book. It is a great first effort for a new novelist. However, the last two hours of the audiobook, it was completely obvious that the book would end on a cliffhanger. No resolution to he story but a setup for book 2. That made the listening less interesting because it felt like the plot was being drawn out unnecessarily. Will I read book 2 if it is released? Not sure. The teen-like love interests of the sisters became unbearable at points, but maybe this appeals to a certain segment of readers. The repetition of the year at the beginning of each chapter was unusual. Not sure why this was done.

Strong Black Women and Magic
Daughters of Nri blends the fantastic with the all-too-real. Reni K. Amayo does not shy away from telling the story of gender and power structures, the thrills and fears of being strong spirited women. An exquisite world, characters so relatable despite our differences in setting, a story that carries one along and never leaves one hanging. Highly recommend for readers who love magic, strong women, Afrocentric storytelling, characters who braid each other’s hair and fight against oppression.

Worth a read
The story is great but I think the execution needs work. The story had a great build up that (in my opinion) took to long. And by the time it came the "climax" it was sort of a let down. But I did like the story and I think there should be more like it, hopefully the author comes out with a sequel.
