Das Paradies war früher schöner ist der erste Band einer humorvoll-skurrilen Krimi-Reihe aus Österreich, in der der herrlich verschrobene Oberst Benedikt Kordesch ermittelt, der zwar das Autofahren ebenso scheut wie den Alkohol, aber das Herz am rechten Fleck hat.
Ausgerechnet zu Beginn der Sommer-Saison wird im Hotel Paradies am Millstätter See in Kärnten ein prominenter Gast ermordet: Der Starkoch aus München liegt an einem makellosen Julimorgen erstochen in seinem Bett.
In Wien ist man alarmiert, denn ein Abgeordneter aus der Region ist selbst Hotelier und außerdem ein guter Freund des Innenministers. Um den Fall möglichst schnell und geräuschlos aufzuklären, wird der scharfsinnige Oberst Benedikt Kordesch nach Kärnten geschickt, der unter Kollegen als »etwas wunderlich« gilt.
Dank der eher spröden Einheimischen gestalten sich Kordeschs Ermittlungen zunächst mehr als zäh. Vielleicht hat es auch damit zu tun, dass er keine allzu hohe Meinung von denen hat, die hier das Geld und das Sagen haben. Allerdings ist es auch wenig hilfreich, dass sich der Oberst just in dem Moment in seine Hauptverdächtige verliebt, als eine zweite Leiche am sonnigen Seeufer treibt...
Mit reichlich trockenem Humor lässt Simon Ammer in seinem Österreich-Krimi das Politische mit dem allzu Menschlichen kollidieren, die Liebe mit der Habgier und die Komik mit der Tragik. Vor der sommerlichen Kulisse Kärntens bietet der Krimi die perfekte Urlaubslektüre für alle, die es gern ein bisschen hintersinniger und schräger mögen.
