Publisher's summary

In a city where the elite are powerful as gods, the season is about to begin. The Immortal Orders will gather, pair, and create a spectacle for all of Nuva Troi to witness.

Harlow Krane is a sorciere who wants nothing more than to recover from her most recent breakup in peace. When the season begins, her Order needs her help to save their ancestral district from being taken over by the Illuminated, the most powerful immortals in Nuva Troi. They offer to back off—if Harlow agrees to pair with their most eligible bachelor, Finn McKay.

Finn McKay is one of the Illuminated. Rich, powerful, and he isn't afraid of anyone—except for his parents. When they push him towards Harlow Krane, he knows their purposes are sinister at best. As the season begins, it's clear something is dangerously wrong but besides Finn, only Harlow seems to notice.

With magic behaving strangely, the balance of power between the Immortal Orders and humans grows deadlier by the day. Harlow and Finn must work together to keep ancient grudges from resurfacing and take back their lives in the process.

Contains mature themes.

Maybe the perfect book for me

This might be the most perfect modern fantasy romance yet. It’s right up there with Crescent City, which was my introduction into the genre. The dynamic between characters, the world building, the character development, it’s all so so good! The characters felt so real. They’re actions and reactions felt so real to who they are. There was never a moment where I became frustrated with a decision or reaction. No “why would they do that?! The solution’s obvious!” I felt so connected to Harlow, and loved her story on her own and with Finn and her family. Just *chefs kiss*. Starting book 2 now! The only con I would say is the narrator’s male voices, but I couldn’t do what she does, so no judgement here.

Couldn’t finish

Boring romance; Finn is stupid or manipulative (can’t decide which) and Harlow is a victim. Lots of discussions about outfits, make up, party going, interior designs and youthful mistakes. There is a hint of a mystery, but I just couldn’t make myself finish the book to try to get to it. I was in the 20s chapter-wise, and the only thing so far regarding the mystery was that a scream was heard, which actually occurred near the beginning of the book. Forget it!
