Publisher's summary

Featured title on PBS's The Great American Read in 2018

As a New England mother struggles to support her family in the wake of her husband's service in the Civil War, her four daughters struggle, too - caught between childhood dreams and the realities of burgeoning adulthood. For Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, raised in integrity and virtue, negotiating the right path in life means making choices that will either narrow or expand their destinies.

Based on the author’s life, Little Women transcends genre, gender, and class with its examination of personal quests, societal restrictions, family ties, and the end of innocence.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to listen to a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature's most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

Classic story. One for the girls

Beautiful story.
My 11 year old daughter and I loved listening to this together. My son and husband were terribly bored though. Definitely one for the girls.

fantastic performance of a classic!

I love classic books, and when I can find them in a well-performed audiobook so much the better. This is extremely well done, the narrator has a lovely pleasing voiced and a very nice Pace. I enjoyed this book tremendously!

Sweet story, saccharine performance

Always a sweet story to revisit, but the voices for the girls were a bit overly saccharine in an already sentimental story.

Little Women, narrated by Sandra Burr

Ms. Burr makes the prose come alive. It is like listening to a radio play. As a listener, you trust in her strong narrative voice and miss it when you put the book down for awhile. The text is a great moral prescription for men and women young and old, but I believe the audio book helped me perceive the moral nuance more clearly. Reading alone, I would sometimes grow distracted by some of the longer philosophical passages, so if that's the case for you, the audio by Sandra Burr is recommended.

A classic nicely rendered!

Such a classic and well worth a listen for its vivid glimpse into the lives of a respectable but impoverished family in Civil War era America. The book has been loved for its warm descriptions of young people growing up, and sustained through their problems by their love for each other and their strong faith. These days, the faith aspect can seem a little overdone, and in the second part of the book the author almost mocks herself gently when one of the "Little Women", Jo, is trying to find her voice as a writer and veers wildly between overblown moral tales and tacky sensationalism. But it's the sense of gentle humour and clever observation which saves the book from being just another 19th century religious tract. These are real people, with real people's flaws, and we can love them as we'd love our real neighbours.
It was fun listening to this edition with my kids (tweens and teenagers) and comparing our observations!
