Audible Editor Reviews

Author of Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy published his epic account of English rural life, Far From the Madding Crowd, in 1874. Spanning years, this story details Bathsheba Everdene and Gabriel Oak's complex relationship. Jill Master's performance is perfect for this passionate audiobook. Capturing Hardy's romanticism, Master's British voice is airy and sweet yet dramatic. By consistently modulating her pacing and pitch, Masters ensures that this 15-hour saga captivates. Effortlessly, she handles both male and female voices. Fans of Victorian realist literature will certainly enjoy this complicated audiobook.

Publisher's Summary

Thomas Hardy brings us an England that once existed but no more. It is rural, traditional, pastoral - a society of mannered conduct that flows like a deep river where powerful currents eddy and swirl. In this powerful novel of love and disillusion, Hardy's heroine is torn between the three men in her life. Passionate but capricious, her romantic involvements have fascinated generations of readers.

It was as a poet that Hardy wished to be remembered, but today critics regard his novels as an even more memorable contribution to English literature for their psychological insight, their instinctive delineation of English character, and their profound presentation of great tragedy.

The story of a woman's will in a man's world. She learns that not all choices at 20 are those one would make at 40

Wonderful. The narrator was exceptional. I felt I was an observer there in the community. I didn't want the tale to end.

    "Fuzzy audio, maddening story"

Oh my goodness. Lessons for the kids: 1. (Spoiler) Gabriel Oak sat around being Plan B for years and years and it paid off for him but what in the world. Never do this. 2. Bathsheba... is she bad at decisions because her parents died and she has no mentor? Is she just a country bumpkin? Did people in this time just stir up drama for fun? I would not file her as a strong female lead, though in the end she almost squeaks into that category. There is more exposition on her at the end than in the beginning. The writing was fantastic, though.
"...though it was possible to form guesses concerning [Boldwood's] wild capabilities from old floodmarks faintly visible, he had never been seen at the high tides which caused them."

I read the audiobook read by Jill Masters, which is a great reading but with terrible sound quality. It needs remastering. I would recommend finding a newer recording.

The narrator does a great job changing her voice for each character. I will have my teenage daughters read this... Or listen to it.. When they are starting to date. What a great tale of love, infatuation, determination and selfishness .

    "Pretty good"

I listen to this recording about 40 years after reading the book and shortly after seeing the second filmed version. I almost always get a lot out of the recording that I missed in the reading, and this was no exception. Hardy's love of the rural life shines through every word, and the story is good and strong. Jill Masters reads well, if a little too carefully. Well worth getting.

    "Poor quality"
Would you try another book from Thomas Hardy and/or Jill Masters?

This recording is horrid. The recording quality is so poor that it's irritating to listen to. Nothing against the narrator herself--it simply sounds like she's on a scratchy old record played inside a tin can. Do not purchase this version. Audible would not give me a refund.

Recording isn't good. Audio volume changes throughout and even is muffled at several points.
Story is interesting, but abridged version might flow better. Lots of extra details that made the plot drag.

"Like Jane Austen but the opposite!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If you love Jane Austin but hate her pesky, strong, female leads, Far From the Madding Crowd is the book for you! A bonafied nut job of a female lead who was independent (albeit ditsy) but brought to her knees by the womanizing bad boy, meanwhile an obsessive homicidal man forced her to make promises she doesn't want to, all while the "friend zoned" laborer waits by her side to pick up the pieces of her heart.

    "Great story, terrible audio quality"

Definitely a classic but sounds like it was recorded underwater in the 1930's. Be prepared to persevere with the audio - it doesn't really add to the book.

"beautiful story but my word Bathsheba .."

I adore this classic, a strong female lead characters are always a winner with me however.. Bathsheba is such a frustrating character!!! I felt myself constantly exasperated with her frivolous attitude towards the men she was leading on and her lack of ability to take any sort of responsibility. Overall a lovely story but if you don't get frustrated by her.. well you are a saint./

"Excellent story. Great narration. Poor recording."

This is a book I've been meaning to read for years and it was a delight. I loved the story and the characters and the narration was excellent. My only criticism was the quality of the recording itself. At times in the car it was really muffled, almost completely inaudible and at one point it completely cut out altogether for a few seconds - Chapter 17 I think this was. However overall it is highly recommended if you can put up with rewinding it a bit here and there.

I loved this book at school. English set work in 1978. Still a great read. Narrator really good. I forgot how annoying Boldwood was. Nevertheless, I love a happy ending and that is what I got.
