Publisher's Summary

Cousin Phillis – a miniature masterpiece – is set in the 1840s, when the coming of the railway was changing the face of England, and quiet rural communities, coming into contact with the outside world, were changed forever. The story focuses on the effect these changes have on a naïve country girl, Phillis, as she encounters love, with all its pains and pleasures, for the first time.

Delicate Story

Elizabeth Gaskell, better known for her full-length novels, has written a lovely story of a country family told through the eyes of a cousin. Although the story does not contain the depth you would expect from a longer novel, her descriptions of the family, the farm, and the railway, which is being built and will forever change their lives, as well as the budding romance makes this read well worth it. I recommend this story.

Cousin Phillis

I love the buck and couldn’t wait to start listening. I can’t get through the very beginning though; Narration is so bad and the choice so poorly thought out and makes it impossible for me to listen through.

a jewel!

Wonderfully performed, a beautifully written story by Elizabeth Gaskell. We see the heroine through the eyes of her male cousin, an unusual narrative perspective.

Sweet!😊

Such a lovely quiet book to listen to. Such a change to have a story you never have to be embarrassed to have someone else listening with you. You could listen with even small tots! In comparison to the world today, it could almost be a fairy tale without the wicked witch -stepmother, or such!

The coming of the railway in the 19th century...

A rather sad tale - and not worth the money, though it gives a good feel for country life in the 19th century.

Vintage Gaskell

One of Gaskell's last novels, unfinished but nevertheless an engaging story with interesting and believable characters.
A good reading by Joe Marsh.
