Publisher's summary

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto, of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized, is one of the greatest moments in literary history.

A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Great story. I only rated it three stars because some words were blanked out leaving a pause.

Excellent Narration by John Slattery

A great novel really well narrated by John Slattery. An almost theatrical presentation. This was my third or fourth reading since high school. Each reading I appreciate Hemingway 's narrative skills even more.

A Conversation With Hemingway

Rough and ready prose sprinkled with fleeting moments of profound beauty, sadness, or violence.

Surprisingly pulls you in

I didn’t love this book at first. It was slow and more matter of fact than I’m used to. But it sure enough pulled me in and found myself crying at the end. It’s a slow burn and I highly recommend it. Comparable to a gentleman in Moscow as well as Bel Canto

Outstanding

I was not a Hemingway fan, but wanted to listen to one of his books. I chose this one because it was medium in length (compared to others). It is one of the audio books that you find yourself listening to any time you can. It's a terrific story, extremely well narrated and the story is not so obvious that you know what's about to happen next. This was so well done I decided to get For whom the bell tolls to continue exploring Hemingway. You will enjoy this book.

Slow and Steady

Narrator was very good. Each main character consistent and easy to distinguish.

Story was good. Not too long winded on any descriptions of scenes, but vivid enough to easily picture what is going on, though a rudimentary knowledge of WW1 Era lifestyles will enhance the experience.

Pacing is slow but steady. Definitely not a book written for a fast paced audience. I enjoyed it, but it's not for everyone. But best part are the military scenes. The interactions between soldiers had me openly laughing at times, and I can say they are often very accurate in their tone. The love story, however, will not sit well with modern sentiments. It is deeply rooted in early 20th century standards of male/female role expectations.
