Well thought out and full of good advice

Just to give perspective, I have read or listened to many dating and marriage books and one thing I really appreciate about Debra Fileta is that she discusses topics in a very balanced and full pictured way. I loved reading her book True Love Dates and was excited to hear that she was coming out with Choosing Marriage. Even though I am not married yet, I was convicted of different issues I see in my life and was encouraged to discover them and start dealing with them now instead of after getting married. This book goes to the core and helps discover heart issues that need to be healed to have a healthy and thriving marriage as well as talking through the misconceptions we often have of marriage and the actual reality of day-to-day life onced married. Marriage really is about making many choices of loving another even when you don't feel like it and also learning to discuss both of your needs with each other so you can both meet those needs in a balanced and healthy way. Both partners need to be on the same page and choose marriage. Very well written book! I will definitely add this to my books to re-listen to and would definitely recommend this to married couples, those who are dating, and singles.

Christian focused but has transferable nuggets

Central themes: regular and intentional communication, centering the relationship over self, and the "work" marriage entails.

Audience: Another theme is expectations going into marriage. Aside from married couples, I recommend the book to single people and couples who are considering marriage to address these expectations in advance.

The pros: The book seemed the best out of many options I looked at, but despite all my researching I missed that the book was published by "Christian Audio." I found most of the books on marriage were religiously focused so options were limited. As a non-religious person, I decided to give it a try and swap alternatives that resonate for me when the book was overtly Christian, ex. god = values, relationship with Jesus = moral compass. By doing that, there were many valuable nuggets of advice from the author that can be applied to non-secular relationships. Although the book has a conservative slant, the author incorporates a section on modern gender roles and also talks about sex in marriage.

The cons: The author talks about relationships beyond traditional gender roles, but still has a very conservative view of relationships and one based on a heteronormative perspective. She also talks about practices like avoiding personal relationships with people of the opposite sex and, even if she doesn't say it outright, implies premarital sex is a sin.
