Publisher's Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Burnout by Amelia Nagoski and Emily Nagoski, read by Emily Nagoski.
This groundbreaking book explains why women experience burnout differently from men - and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions and live a more joyful life.
The gap between what it's really like to be a woman and what people expect women to be is a primary cause of burnout, because we exhaust ourselves trying to close the space between the two. How can you 'love your body' when everything around you tells you you're inadequate? How do you 'lean in' at work when you're already giving 110 percent and aren't recognized for it? How can you live happily and healthily in a world that is constantly telling you you're too fat, too needy, too noisy and too selfish? Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, the best-selling author of Come as You Are, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of overwhelm and exhaustion and confront the obstacles that stand between women and well-being.
With insights from the latest science, prescriptive advice and helpful worksheets and exercises, Burnout reveals:
- What you can do to complete the biological stress cycle - and return your body to a state of relaxation.
- How to manage the 'monitor' in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration.
- How the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies - and how to fight back.
- Why rest, human connection, and befriending your inner critic are key to recovering from and preventing burnout.
Eye-opening, compassionate and optimistic, Burnout will completely transform the way we think about and manage stress, empowering women to thrive under pressure and enjoy meaningful yet balanced lives. All women will find something transformative in these pages - and be empowered to create positive and lasting change.

Life-changing
My therapist recommended this book to me when I was down and out, emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted.
Since listening to the audio book I have already started implementing some of the strategies (mainly around boundary setting) and am already seeing positive results!
I absolutely loved the way that this book is not only written, but narrated in such a calm and soothing manner. It felt like I was getting guidance, compassion and reassurance from two maternalistic warriors, who have seen and done it all and could empathise with my pain.
My only critique, would be the overly gendered language that was used. I could see NB, gender queer/questioning persons also identifying with the principals in this book. Perhaps the use of gender neutral pronouns might foster a better sense of inclusion.
Otherwise, I love love love this book! I’m about to start listening to it again! Thank you Emily and Amelia for this wonderful gift.

For everyone
This was brilliant! Not only have I gotten insight into my friends, family, colleagues and co-humans who identify as female - but as a self-diagnosed cis-gender man (albeit gay) I also identified with a lot of the topics discussed and gained insight to myself as well. An unexpected gem!

Gently pragmatic
Emily and Amelia have an amazing balance of such big sciencey brains that are so passionate about women's health and wellbeing, and also a rare understanding of how to communicate with those who have big brains that aren't so sciencey or specifically passionate on this topic. This book is approachable for almost anyone, and yet so rife with real scientific info. Love love love it.

A beautiful, brilliantly researched book foe women
I heard their podcast on Dare to Lead with Brène Brown and got hooked to the book. It’s a scientific narration that tells what ails us Human Givers , a distinct category from human beings. We probably know what is not right but they put words, scientific research and and real life examples to help find the truth. Not preachy, not self helpish but more like a conversation with self. I recommend to every woman who feels all she’s done is being a “giver”.

Honestly I don't really get the hype?
I read the reviews and figured this would be an insightful and relevant read as a young female who's experienced burnout that left me depressed for a time. I finished it today and I honestly can't say I learned anything I didn't already know. It didn't focus on burnout in the way I've experienced it - in the workplace. It was more general with a lot of reference to the "patriarchy, ugh" as the narrator continually stated. If that's what you're looking for, I wouldn't go here for it. A bit too woke and not enough substance.

Really not sure
I thought there was some really obvious but sound advice in the first two chapters but when they go onto talk about being over weight I lost a lost of respect for this book. I agree that the bikini industry probably isn't healthy for body image but seemingly ignoring the detrimental health implications of being overweight. Back in the day when being overweight was seen as a status symbol they were not educated in the health implications. I would interested to see what evidence they have based their opinions on. Yes being underweight isn't healthy but being a healthy weight whilst being fit and active and strong is much healthier than being overweight!

One of the best books I've read in 2019
It's not just for women. It's the book I wish I'd had years ago. Each chapter is so relevant and accessible I feel that this could so easily be adapted to be a course that I'd happily spend the rest of my life teaching/showing people. Congratulations to Emily and Amelia for writing one of the most sensible and inspiring 'self-help' books I've ever read and I've read so many! I've recommended it to my friends and two more copies are arriving today for me to give as gifts this Christmas to my favourite people.

Irritating to listen to
For someone who’s experiencing a burnout (I only assume most readers), I found it very irritating to listen to the silly, kiddy voices.. Its a serious topic and I would have preferred to be recorded as one, if I wanted something light, silly, wishy washy, I would have looked at the kids / entertainment section. I wish I bought a print version instead ….

A must read for all modern women
Let me just say how much I LOVE the Nagoski sisters!
Having been recommended my book by my counsellor and loving it, I cannot stop telling people about it.
Very soon you will be the same. How else will all our fellow sisters know the truth about human-giver syndrome and the patriarchy (ugh!).
The references are all relevant and not excessively American-ised. There are strong women in the examples that are relatable and I cannot praise the Nagoski sisters highly enough for sharing these stories, research and info with us.
It makes everything that we should know about our bodies so easy to understand. It helps to appreciate and start to push back against the trap all modern women fall into.
In short, this book has helped me. And it can help you!

Having a burnout myself I feel deeply related to every paragraph. The value of the book is priceless, to me as a male, to me as a person with giver syndrome, to me as a husband, to me as a father, to me as a son, to me as a friend. I recommend this book to my daughters not because they have burnout, but to understand me, to understand others to understand the society we are living.

The book informs us about the importance of completing the stress cycle and to be compassionate to oneself. “Burnout” will make anyone rethink about just being the human giver and to invest in finding time for oneself. Look after yourself first that you may take care of people around you.

A refreshing discussion about Burnout for women.
I thought l would listen to this book as a refresher on how to manage my long term anxiety, stress and health. Instead l was challenged with new (to me) strategies, perspectives and issues that will help me approach my issues from a new perspective.
for me, the stories they weave throughout the book cement the ideas they are presenting and provide the often missing link about HOW l can apply this thinking of action into my life TODAY.
Am about to re-listen to the book.

Ok, if you can get past the patronizing pretentiousness
“Blegh...” - if you can stand listening to authors and narrators mentions this word religiously throughout a text then this is probably going to be a book you can get through. I preserved. There was some good points but overall a light-touch on the subject of burnout and more a “feel-good, girlfriend weekend sleepover bitch-fest”. Ok if you don’t read a lot of more credible literature. Anyway, was good background listening whilst maintaining my perfect life, household and stereotypical norm as focussed on in this book. Blegh.
