Publisher's summary

In July of 1986, Greg LeMond stunned the sporting world by becoming the first American to win the Tour de France, the world's pre-eminent bicycle race, defeating French cycling legend Bernard Hinault. Nine months later, LeMond lay in a hospital bed, his life in peril after a hunting accident, his career as a bicycle racer seemingly over. And yet, barely two years after this crisis, LeMond mounted a comeback.

In 1989, he once again won the Tour - by the almost impossibly narrow margin of eight seconds over another French legend, Laurent Fignon. It remains the closest Tour de France in history. The Comeback chronicles the life of this great American athlete, from his roots in Nevada and California to the heights of global fame.

With the kind of narrative drive that propels books like Moneyball and a fierce attention to detail, Daniel de Vise reveals the dramatic, ultra-competitive inner world of a sport rarely glimpsed up close, building a compelling case for LeMond as its great American hero.

Excellent for Cyclists and Greg LeMond Fans

I didn’t know the LeMond story…and this book did a great job of telling it. While there were slow points in the book, there were also those when I was at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen. I had no idea how influential Greg is, and how he sacrificed so much to save professional cycling from itself. Excellent read for cyclists.

Thanks Mr. de Vise

I thought I would try Amazon Audible on a long drive to see family. "The Comeback" was the first title that showed up in my interests list. Wow! It has been a loooong time since I have been this captivated by a book! I first started watching The Tour de France when Greg Lemond won in 1986. I fell in love with the sport, the bikes, the grit of the riders...all of it. "The Comeback" is a beautiful reminder of what a true champion Greg Lemond is! This book tells the story so well and covers so much more than I thought! I couldn't wait to get back into my Jeep and listen! I loved it so much I am also going to buy the hardback version so I can actually read it again. Thank you Daniel de Vise, for reminding me of what a true champion Greg Lemond is! And thank you for capturing what a humble and grateful champion he is!

Great Cycling Story

This was a great in-depth story of Greg Lemond, but it also does a nice job touching on some of the key events of modern cycling history. I was enthralled. I came to really appreciate that Greg Lemond is a cyclist the US can be very proud of. I loved this book and was sad to have it end.

Great story

As someone who has watched the Tour for years and wondered just how the riders did it this book opened my eyes.
Greg’s story is a triumphant one of staying truthful to honor and should inspire all to do what is necessary to bring truth to the front
We are facing this now in our country Nuff said

A champion of the heart

Hearing the true story of Lemonds past, his hurt, his suffering, his triumphs and his legacy was as endearing as it was suspenseful. The wife who loved him for who he was. His spirited tours.
The narrator did an excellent job portraying the scenery and giving it life.
