As a young schoolboy, David Essex dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and was signed up by his beloved West Ham United. But as a teenager, he developed a passion for music, which set him on a very different path, and ultimately led to superstardom. It wasn't, however, an easy start. Scraping a living on the edges of show business was a hard slog, and he endured many disappointments.
Then, aged 23, he went along to an audition for a new musical called Godspell and won the role (Jesus) that shot him to fame. Within a year he was starring in a smash hit film, That'll Be the Day, and had written and recorded his first number-one single, 'Rock On'. It was the start of Essex Mania, and a long journey of undreamt of adventure.
From Godspell to EastEnders, it's been an amazing life. And here is David's full incredible story - in his own words.
Really enjoyed this book, David Essex has an easy to listen to reading voice which conveys the ups and downs in his life in a conversational and informative manner. It is well written and I would recommend it to his many fans who have followed his varied carreer throughout the years.

What a great, GREAT biography until the end. David , like me you came up the hard way, WestHam through and through. Why, OH , why spend so much time of a great read talking about "East Enders". !!!??
at the end ?? You could have easily continued to give a review on' Coronation Street, Home and Away, Neighbours etc.......etc
Brilliant start........poor finish

If your a big fan of David Essex what more could you want, his life story, told in his own voice, I'm listening to him as I write this, he is taking me back to the lovable lad that I fell for many years ago. If your a fan you will not be disappointed. This is my first audible book but when I found out it is his voice I had to buy it. If I could I'd have rated it a hundred + stars, but 5 stars will have to do.

Loved it, so much more to this man than I knew before. It was great that he narrated it himself as well. Rock on David x

Loved everything about the audible Spoken beautifully very entertaining I didn’t want it to end...I loved him sharing stories of his life and on three or four accations I was reduced to tears I thought that it was very cleverly written and was read with great passion and pride also I felt with honesty I also felt that to hear this ,was like listening to a friend ...at times pouring his heart out 5o you. A fabulous listen Thankyou David it was a pleasure! X
Well, I don't envy his families having to put up with his incessant touring and travel - plus solo exploration travel sabbaticals and plus sharing him with the public. He must have been financially well off enough to have been able to stay at home a bit more over the years and perhaps his relationships might have lasted. A good insight into this workaholic's life which I hope made him happy - it certainly made me glad for my simple life - an additional bonus on hearing the book.
David's packed a lot in to his life. He's an amiable, honest and self deprecating man and this comes across in the book. It's well written and, of course, excellently read. As someone who remembers Essex mania I followed his career because, like many others I just like the guy. A talented singer and performer...? Unquestionably. Now it seems we can add writing to the list.
i adored david essex in my youth and was looking forward to this, pleased to hear hexwas readingbit himself (yes, hes still got a locely voice ( however i found it repetitive and boring. was pretty glad when it ended. sorry david, you sound like a decent family man but i found this boring. still love rock on though, and you were fab in evita, first musical i ever saw.
What did you like most about Over the Moon?
David's reading of it made it come alive and become believable in a way another person could not have achieved. It would have been a good listen but much better read by the person who lived it.
What did you like best about this story?
Everything. Although there was not too much personal detail, as in David's private life, I found it compelling, moving and learned so much about the man and his work that I didn't know. I have been a fan since the 1970s but did not know much about his charity work for one thing.
Have you listened to any of David Essex’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I love David's music but am not aware he has narrated any other books.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I would have loved to but listened on my daily commute. I didn't want it to end.
Any additional comments?
A wonderful life story told by a very passionate, caring and talented man. I will definitely go back to it and listen again in the future. Thoroughly enjoyable with no padding but lots of stories of David's life and work. He's also quite a private person who has managed to keep his private life out of the public eye to an extent which is all credit to him. I would recommend this 100%. I have never been a fan of Eastenders but was fascinated by David's account of his time on the soap and unlike another reviewer, didn't think too much time was spent on this part. It is, after all, a part of his career. Brilliant, well done David. I look forward to hearing about the next part of your life!
