Publisher's summary

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel offers an unforgettable account of Hitler's horrific reign of terror in Night. This definitive edition features a new translation from the original French by Wiesel's wife and frequent translator, Marion Wiesel.

Night is an unmistakably autobiographical account of the author's own gruesome experiences in Nazi Germany's death camps. Told through the eyes of 14-year-old Eliezer, the tragic fate of the Jews from the little town of Sighet unfolds with a heart-wrenching inevitability. Even as they are stuffed into cattle cars bound for Auschwitz, the townspeople refuse to believe rumors of anti-Semitic atrocities. Not until they are marched toward the blazing crematory at the camp's "reception center" does the terrible truth sink in.

Recounting the evils at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Wiesel's enduring classic of Holocaust literature raises questions of continuing significance for all future generations: How could man commit these horrors, and could such an evil ever be repeated?

Critic reviews

"Elie Wiesel’s memoir of life in the Nazi death camps has been reissued with a new translation by Wiesel’s wife, Marion. Read by George Guidall, this new edition is a brilliant and haunting reminder of these horrific crimes, as well as a testament to Wiesel’s faith and resilience. Guidall is the ideal reader, and gives yet another masterful performance. Every word Guidall utters reminds the listener of the fear, the suffering, and the hatred Wiesel witnessed and experienced as he drew upon his every instinct to fight for survival. The audio edition also contains a new preface by Wiesel, as well as Guidall’s performance of Wiesel’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. NIGHT is already a classic, and this audio edition is a superb complement to the text. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award." (AudioFile magazine)

"[A] slim volume of terrifying power." (The New York Times)

Best story read in a long time.

I would recommend this to anyone how is reading this for there school, and are on a short dead line. It is a great story on the events of the Holocaust from a first person view, with very sad moments.

A Must Re-Read

I read Night when I was in High School and absolutely loved it. It's one of the few books from my youth that I remember. That was over ten years ago and I was excited to start off 2015 re-reading Night. There is really nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. Hearing about Elie and his family, and his town willingly board these trains to the concentration camps even with a rabbi telling them about the Nazi's atrocities is one of the toughest things to read.

As you continue to hear about Elie and his fathers journey at Auschwitz it brings to life the horror of their experience in the concentration camp. I don't think any re-telling of these experiences hits as hard as Elie's re-telling of his time in his novel Night. There were times when I was listening to the audiobook that I would pause it or just turn it off. The novel hits hard and hits often. Just trying to imagine how you would survive something like a Nazi concentration camp made any stress that was going on in my life seem negligible. If you haven't read Night before or its been a while it would be a great idea to read it now.

A Survivor!

Night is finely written - yet not too overwelming in language or length. Our high school students read this, so I had not and I decided to and what a great book for all races.

Elie Weisel recounts his personal account of the Holocaust from his youth in Siget to the bowels of Hell in the concentration camps. His personalization of horrors experienced by 6 million Jews and allows the reader to intimately share the experience and thoughts of a Holocaust survivor.

One of the best books I have ever read.

If you could sum up Night in three words, what would they be?

A true story about the Holocaust and that horrible Auschwitz, written by a person that was there, whom saw, smelt and felt the terrible Atrocities on the Jews.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

it makes you feel sick and get all Emotional what happened at Auschwitz and admirer the courage and will power to stay alive to survive.

Any additional comments?

A excellent read.
the rating score will not work so i will write it.

I've read this book more times than literally any other in my life. Critical history with no exaggeration. A must read.

A Powerful Memoir, Powerfully Narrated.

Upon Mr. Wiesel's death I decided it was finally time to read his memoir. My children read it in middle school, but I had never read it. I knew it would be moving, and I knew it would affect me deeply. It did. And perhaps it is unfair to compare a memoir to historical fiction, but two of my top 5 favorite books of all time are Winds of War and War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk, and I found Night to be less powerful than either of those books. For that reason I am giving it 4.5 stars.

Gerge Guidall, like always, is superb. His narration is subtle, quiet, and perfectly timed. His voice gives life to the words on the page and at one point I even looked back to the website to confirm that it was him rather the author himself reading the book. It is so well done that it feels like the author is telling his own story. Excellent.

Sad story well told

This was a well written and read story about a very sad subject. It was not told in a way that was too dramatic and I'm glad I listened.

A Thoughtful Read

My teenage daughter had to read this for AP Lang and asked me to read it with her. To quot another member of her class, "This book is a bummer!" This book will definitely cause you to think. You will be different after "reading" this book. Remember, it is non~fiction!
