Publisher's summary

In 1963 America's most famous atheist, Madalyn Murray O'Hair, won the landmark lawsuit filed on behalf of her son, William, that effectively banned prayer in public schools. Bill shares in vivid detail his upbringing - the raging battles, his activity in his mother's atheistic empire, his dependence on drugs, and his years as a fugitive. Nearly two decades after the court's decision, Bill came to the end of his personal strength. In desperation he called out to God, and God answered.

From embezzlement to kidnapping to murder, Bill reviews the shocking evidence surrounding the disappearance of his mother, brother, and daughter. Though actively involved in atheism, Bill discovered the gift Jesus Christ offers to all who seek him. He invites you to experience God's grace in this journey from despair to everlasting love.

Great book and narrator

I really liked the book. I didn’t know what to expect since the author grew up an atheist and his mother was the most hated atheistic woman in America. She brought the suit to get prayer out of the public school system. I am a devout Christian-didn’t grow up in a Christian home but my mom was no God hater like Madelyn his mother was. What a crazy crazy mother and life he had!!!! He is a gifted writer. I am so very thankful he became a Christian!
I am really glad that I bought this book on Audible. The narrator did a GREAT job. He made the story come to life. It really added to the already stupendous book. The narrator did a phenomenal job.

Explains a lot

I have heard bits and pieces of this story but this book explains so much.

If anyone is looking at schools today & wondering how did we get here, this is the book to read.

If anyone wants to truly understand the type of person who fought to take prayer out of school, this is the book to read. After reading people need to ask themselves, would this be the type of person that I would want to follow or take advise from or be like?
The last part of the book really nails a few very good points and hopefully will cause people to think/ reflect.

Movingly honest testimony.

Brutally clear life testimony of a brilliant man, admitting to victories and failures alike.

Disturbing story

While of course, God's redemption of Bill was a miricle and dramatic, the story prior to that is amazingly dysfunctional. It shows, as history always shows, that a life without any input from God is debased and amoral. Just how amoral is amazing to comprehend as you listen to the story. The total selfishness and self absorbtion by people is on display. The disturbing part is that you realize so many people live this way. And as headlines indicate, it is becoming epidemic. Unfortunately, some Christians, as indicated in the book, don't seem to be exempt.
The final tragedy of his family and their end emphasizes Jesus words in the book of John stating the devil was a murderer from the beginning. So he is now.

A story for our time

I gave great ratings in spite of a repetitive first half in need of cutting. The exciting second half makes up for it. A message more relevant and evident now in 2019 than ever!

Great historical autobiography

It is always interesting to get a close up perspective of a historical event. I remember praying in school and I remember hearing about Madalyn Murray O’Hair in the news. I didn’t mind the attention to detail at all because I thought it was interesting.

Enlightening

I said prayers in school as a small child. They, plus the Pledge of Allegiance comforted me. We didn't pray at home, but did at my paternal grandparent's home and I felt safe and loved there. I didn't like when they stopped, and as I grew up, and learned who and why they were stopped, I hated that woman. I didn't know Madeline Murray O'Hare, but I had seen her on TV and she always appeared angry and she cussed- a lot. Bill Murray's story gave me insight into how and why Madeline became the most hated woman in America.

dumbstruck

I finished this book in awe of the depths of forgiveness granted such an evil person. to find pity on this woman, who makes the devil look kind is a testament to the power of God's grace thru Jesus Christ. only He can make all things good as evidence on this book.
