Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Bill Clinton built his political career by explaining, persuading, and building rapport. He did it with world leaders, politicians, and the American people. He does it here, building a bond with listeners as he shares his perspective on the past 50 years of history - his and the country's. We've chosen the abridged edition over the unabridged, because hearing Clinton's give voice to his own story is a unique experience. His well known grasp of details and his charm come across in every chapter. — Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

President Bill Clinton's My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts to serving the public.

It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House.

President Clinton's audiobook is also the most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written, encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency actually works.

It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and unrelenting assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right and how he survived and prevailed.

It is a treasury of moments caught alive, among them:

  • The roller-coaster ride of the 1992 campaign
  • The extraordinarily frank exchanges with Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole
  • The cost, both public and private, of the scandal that threatened the presidency

Here is the life of a great national and international figure, revealed with all his talents and contradictions, told openly, directly, in his own completely recognizable voice.

"My Life is, by a generous measure, the richest American presidential autobiography, no other book tells us as vividly or fully what it is like to be president of the United States for eight years." (The New York Times Book Review)

    Great book.

Great content and perspective. Rich history and humbling apologies for his personal failings. Narration was however a bit fragmented - i.e. it was clear different recordings were put together with different tone, pitch, and speed within a single chapter.

    Well written and well spoken

Bill Clinton is an excellent narrator. I honestly didn't know if I would like the book, but I did. I liked it so much that I wish he had read the whole thing. I know it's a lot to ask but he's good at it. There are some parts that are omitted, but I don't think they are any of the political components, just personal stories. Overall, it was a good listen. I liked it so much that I am also listening to his book Giving right now.

    Don't Waste Your Money

I bought this book expecting an inside look at the Presidency. What I got was excuses, excuses, and more excuses. What a bunch of hot air! I am a Democrat and a Clinton supporter but this book is just a waste...spend your hard earned dollars elsewhere...like on Lance Armstrong's book or Rudy Gulliani's. They tell it like it is!

    More Fiction

The words are carefully designed to hide the truth and tends to justify wrongs already in history. Just another attempt by someone good at controlling others to rewrite wrongs.. Well written but a bit difficult to digest if you are seeking truth.

    LBJ meets JFK

Clinton always seemed like a mixture of the worst traits of LBJ and JFK. But I have to say, he really is persuasive. You almost start to believe this stuff as you listen to his excellent narration. I give it one star on that account. But this is a celebrity expos?, not a real biography. Just as he fell short of the office he occupied, he falls short as an historian. There's no "there" there. The real Clinton will only emerge many decades from now when an absolutely fair minded historian digs up all the bones and puts them back together.
