Editorial reviews

Philip F. Nelson hopes to show that Lyndon B. Johnson played a major role in the Kennedy assassination, and unlike the baseless speculation and second-hand hearsay found elsewhere, Nelson grounds his claims with historical and biographical fact in a well-structured narrative that connects LBJ's youthful character flaws to the shady dealings in his early political life, and finally to the mentality that led him to - as Nelson asserts - assassinate JFK. Nelson is assisted in part by the convincing work of Fred Sanders, who is able to convey a believable curiosity and confidence while boldly implicating the 36th president.

Publisher's summary

The case against Lyndon B. Johnson and his role in Kennedy's assassination has never been sounder. LBJ aims to prove that Vice President Johnson played an active role in the assassination of President Kennedy and that he began planning his takeover of the U.S. presidency even before being named the vice presidential nominee in 1960.

Lyndon B. Johnson's flawed personality and character traits, formed as a child, grew unchecked for the rest of his life as he suffered severe bouts of manic-depressive illness. He successfully hid this disorder from the public as he bartered, stole, and finessed his way through the corridors of power on Capitol Hill, though it's recorded that some of his aides knew of his struggle with bipolar disorder.

After years of researching Johnson and the JFK assassination, Phillip F. Nelson conclusively shows that LBJ had an active role in JFK's assassination, and he includes newly uncovered photographic evidence proving that Johnson knew when and where Kennedy's assassination would take place. Nelson's careful and meticulous research has led him to uncover secrets from one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in our country's history.

LBJ plotted to kill JFK? Makes you think...

If you're an assassination conspiracy fan you won't want to miss this audiobook by Phillip F. Nelson. The author has obviously put years into researching his premise and builds a very convincing structure of a conspiracy that puts LBJ at the forefront of the assassination of JFK. I've read every (and I mean every!) publication on this topic and this title ranks at the top of the pile when it comes to research and writing. It makes you truly consider LBJ as a primary conspirator. It could benefit from some editing - perhaps the abridged version is actually a better listen - because it is a long audiobook and there are some tedious expositional sections. Still, it is WELL WORTH THE LISTEN if you enjoy this topic. There are certainly many out there that don't reach this level of documentation and writing.

The narration is average - no great contribution. Fred Sanders gives a journeyman performance with too many mispronunciations (my pet peeve) for comfort. But, it's not a bad listen...just average. The writing is good enough to carry the performance.

If you like this subject go ahead and use the credit.

Mind blowing

Well researched, very thorough. The premise is very compelling and I for one was persuaded with the author's argument.

There Is No Doubt - The Warren Report was fiction!

What made the experience of listening to LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination the most enjoyable?

The word “enjoyable” might be the wrong word to use; the book is captivating and riveting but there are moments when you do have to stop listening to this book in shock and ask yourself… “Did I hear what I really heard?”

There were so many times after hearing this book for the first three times (each time I hear something new) that I’m just in shock and had to google some of the facts that have been presented and it’s all verifiable. The biggest shock of all is the fact that nobody remembers that LBJ was on the verge of being the subject of many investigations for corruption and lying. Another shocker are the numerous ties between Johnson and organized crime and big business that had a lot to lose if JFK pulled The United States out of Vietnam.

There’s also a cast of characters who worked with LBJ who benefitted from the assignation, too numerous to mention.

There are so many facts in this books that demand to be re-examined and digested by the American people.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite "character" is the author and narrator of the book who takes us on this voyage looking for the truth.

Have you listened to any of Fred Sanders’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

There are a lot of passages of this book that is very dry and nothing but facts and figures but Mr. Sanders keeps the listener engaged.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This book could not make a good movie - it would have to be a mini-series. No tag line is needed... the Title is enough.

Any additional comments?

This is one of several books on the topic that I've read but is the most definitive so far. I'm interested to see how this book will match up with Roger Stone's book; The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ

Pulls all the theories together

What did you love best about LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination?

The author has definitely done his research, drawing on many of the other research that had been done on particular aspects of the JFK assassination. This book pulls all this prior research together into one common thread.

What was one of the most memorable moments of LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination?

How the evidence that the author presents is so convincing.

What does Fred Sanders bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I don't have time to read such lengthy paper-based books. Mr. Sanders kept this lengthy story compelling where you didn't want to pause the audiobook.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My extreme reaction is that he changed my perspective on this historic event.

Any additional comments?

A must read. Should be a mandatory book for all college level American History classes.

Credible without being over-cautious

We've had a number of books covering this territory. Their various analyses and theories intersect like a Venn Diagram, as there is usually a decided emphasis in favor of blaming the CIA, the Cubans working with the CIA, the Mafia, the Mossad, or LBJ and his Texas cronies. Philip Nelson comes very close to giving us a Grand Unifying Superset of them all. In his version, LBJ might have been a "mastermind" of the assassination, but he he didn't plan every jot and tittle. Basically an opportunist, LBJ took advantage of grudges and political debts, and used them to his advantage.

I don't buy it

I have a problem with the author's main thesis but i must comment on a contention he made early on. He claims: "Lisa Howard, who died of a drug overdose like Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Kilgallen...."" this guy has got to be kidding!
Lisa Howard sprinted to the pharmacy in an attempt to save her life. prior she'd worked on better relations with Cuba despite JFK's death and had met with mark lane re JFK's assassination.
Dorothy Kilgallen was found dead in a bed she never used, in her nightgown but with her make-up on (something she never did), and the book she was holding was upside down and her glasses weren't in the room. oh and she'd just claimed she was about to break the JFK assassination investigation wide open. and Marilyn Monroe?
this joker clearly did no research on that claim. instead he furthered the mainstream lies about these women. none of them committed suicide. and this is supposed to be revisionist?

LBJ Orchestrated JFK Murder

Many people who remember President John Kennedy's 1960 murder blame his Vice President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, who was facing federal indictment from Robert Kennedy's Justice Department, as well as prison time.
