Publisher's Summary

The world's foremost designer in Formula One, Adrian Newey OBE is arguably one of Britain's greatest engineers and this is his fascinating, powerful memoir.

How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian's unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he's been involved.

A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian's thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form - he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies: most notably Ayrton Senna's death during his time at Williams in 1994.

How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrian's remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling - its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed.

Story of man and his passions

As a life long fan of motor racing of all kinds and a relatively newer fan of Formula 1, this narrative was a fantastic way to deliver the parallels of life and Motorsport. I would highly recommend this to anyone, regardless of if they liked Motorsport or not. Newey is a fascinating man and his story is worth listening too.

Personal story of passion

Who was your favorite character and why?

Senna. Some great insight into his driving style and personality. Though Newey himself comes out as quite an unpredictable man of genius

Which scene was your favorite?

Newey crashing into things.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes for sure. but then I loved stretching it out. didn't want it to end

Any additional comments?

Now i like Adrian

Adrian is not known as a "wordy" person and this book gives quite a good opportunity to listen him constantly.

As i ve progressed the book, i ve felt that i had a connection with his life, experiences and ideas; which is meant to be i guess.

One negative of this "audio"book is you can not dig deep into the technical side. There are pdf s available to examine Adrian's drawings but it was not possible for me to look at them while listening.

The solution is, i will also buy the book after a while and study, including the technical details.

Great job Mr.Newey !!

So much better than you think it will be!

Don't worry it's not too technical.
Funny, entertaining, fascinating, historical, nostalgic. A must listen for any F1 fan.

If you listen to Damon Hill's and Mark Webber's books aswel there's some nice overlap with some of the stories - so you get at least two perspecitves on some events.

For me I expected it to be a dry, tiring listen full of technical babble I didn't understand - given the subject and what I have seen of Adrian Newey interviews. Couldn't be more wrong. He is extremely funny, explains everything in a way that you can relate to and understand (think of that teacher at school who just had a way of explaining things that made everything make sense to you).

I was unsure about this book... I bought it and now have listend to it twice, and enjoyed every minute both times.
Trust me, just buy it, you WILL enjoy it!

Fascinating insights

Although some of the technical details went over my head, this didn't detract from the fact that the audio book oozed the passion, single-mindedness, and humanity of this outstandingly talented man. There were a few annoying mispronunciations, but overall the book was a totally riveting listen.

Hugely entertaining and enlightening.

If you could sum up How to Build a Car in three words, what would they be?

Fascinating, gripping history.

What was one of the most memorable moments of How to Build a Car?

Newey's detailed descriptions of his thinking, concept, drawings, and execution is like oxygen to this 40-years long Formula 1 addict. His way of describing the reasoning for curving this surface or lowering that one, and the effects on car feel and driver feedback, all make for fascinating inside knowledge by the designer himself.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Adrian Newey's wit and comedic style belies his relatively 'normal' appearance. He is a very funny man, with quirky humor, which infects every page. It's unexpected comedy from a potentially dry subject. I loved it.

Any additional comments?

There are passages of this book that may bamboozle a non-F1 fan, granted. However... if you're interested in aerodynamics, car design, and things that affect performance, plus inside information on the drivers who've pedalled his many winning cars, this book will enthrall you. Guaranteed.

Excellent and Detailed F1 Story

There are mixed reviews in this book and I purchased the audio book on a whim having read Mark Webber's autobiography.
I don't watch F1 but love the technical design side and this book smartly weaves the technical design side into a fantastic story about the authors life.
I loved this book and Newey has quite the sense of humor. If you want to know about his life and a detailed history from one of the greatest designers in F1 then this book is for you.

Masterpiece from Adrian Newey.

I'm a mild F1 enthusiast but as an aspiring design engineer, I found this book very very great in depicting the technicality involved in F1. Adrian is truly the best car designer in F1 hands down.

If you are an F1 enthusiast, engineer or both you will definitely enjoy this book.
