Publisher's Summary

The world's foremost designer in Formula One, Adrian Newey OBE is arguably one of Britain's greatest engineers and this is his fascinating, powerful memoir.

How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian's unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he's been involved.

A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian's thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form - he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies: most notably Ayrton Senna's death during his time at Williams in 1994.

How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrian's remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling - its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed.

Now i like Adrian

Adrian is not known as a "wordy" person and this book gives quite a good opportunity to listen him constantly.

As i ve progressed the book, i ve felt that i had a connection with his life, experiences and ideas; which is meant to be i guess.

One negative of this "audio"book is you can not dig deep into the technical side. There are pdf s available to examine Adrian's drawings but it was not possible for me to look at them while listening.

The solution is, i will also buy the book after a while and study, including the technical details.

Great job Mr.Newey !!

Well worth the read if you like F1 or not - applicable to business

Andrian opened the door to closed world of formula one development and competition.
You don’t have to be an engineer to understand and appreciate how they compete.
It is applicable to businesses and leaders. Mr Newey was candid about the business and personal aspects of this highly competitive business.
One of the great sports books I have read that has applicable lessons to apply in other fields.

The stories and the structure are brilliant.

Every F1 fan and car nerd must read this book. Adrian Newey managed to make his mark more than any other F1 designer in the 80s, 90s, 00s, and his contiunuity continues through today.

Pronunciation!

The reader pronounced almost every F1 term, circuit name, or driver name incorrectly. Very annoying.

Very interesting biography but slightly annoying narrator

The biography and technical insight provide by Adrian's book is good and very interesting to a Formula One fan, like myself, but I think it would have been far better if it had been read by the man himself. The narrator was not the best and clearly isn't a motorsport or Formula One fan which detracted from my enjoyment of the book a little.

A wonderful account of the automotive industry and F1

As a grandson of one of the main engineers at Vanwall racing, I really enjoyed listening to Adrian’s account of life in and around Formula One.
