Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Mechanic written and read by Marc 'Elvis' Priestley.

In the high-octane atmosphere of the Formula One pit lane, the spotlight is most often on the superstar drivers. And yet, without the technical knowledge, competitive determination and outright obsession from his garage of mechanics, no driver could possibly hope to claim a spot on the podium. These are the guys who make every world champion, and any mistakes can have critical consequences.

That's not to say the F1 crew is just a group of highly skilled technical engineers, tweaking machinery in wind tunnels and crunching data through high-spec computers. These boys can seriously let their hair down. Whether it be parties on luxury yachts in Monaco or elaborate photo opportunities in gravity-defying aeroplanes, this is a world which thrills on and off the track.

Join McLaren's former number one mechanic, Marc 'Elvis' Priestley, as he tours the world, revealing some of Formula One's most outrageous secrets and the fiercest rivalries, all fuelled by the determination to win.

This is Formula One as you've never seen it before.

Diary of a shallow, self-obsessed bore in F1

I bought this book as it was recommended after I'd finished another F1 book on Audible. Well, that was worst recommendation from Audible, ever. This book is absolute rubbish and I will be returning it to get my credit back. It is one of the most fatuous, shallow and idiotic descriptions of any industry that I've ever encountered. The author prattles on endlessly about drunken parties, vandalism and cretinous practical jokes. He fails to describe some of the most interesting technical and strategic eras of F1 despite being perfectly positioned to provide a fascinating insight. Instead we hear one moronic anecdote after another, after which the author is punished, then briefly contrite, before re-commencing the next round of witless, destructive antics. His McLaren colleagues must have been enormously relieved when he left to take up a new "career", fittingly, in the shallow and self-obsessed realm of television and media. The fact he now markets himself as a motivational speaker is particularly grotesque - does he motivate people to get plastered and wreck hotel rooms, I wonder? These appear to be his only skills. Don't waste your time on this atrocious nonsense.

Fact 1

A very honest picture of life in F1 during it's peak by someone inside the bubble.

Lads Mag In Book Form; But good craic

Interesting insight. Mainly focused on drunken antics of the team but in addition the content is good at times, just too much "lads talk" in it to be regarded as a very good book, bubble gum for the brain. But entertaining. I enjoyed it.

Fun insight...

An interesting and fun insight into the excesses of peak budget formula 1. Sounds as if it is actually narrated by the author, a pleasant change from bot talk :-)

A fantastic insight.

Very enjoyable and not typical of a racing book, giving insight more into the behind the scenes with some truly honest and shocking revelations. Good job Elvis.
