Publisher's Summary

On September 2, 2013, at the age of 64, Diana Nyad emerged onto the sands of Key West after swimming 111 miles, nation to nation, Cuba to Florida, in an epic feat of both endurance and human will, in 53 hours. Diana carried three poignant messages on her way across this stretch of shark-infested waters, and she spoke them to the crowd in her moment of final triumph:

  1. Never, ever give up.
  2. You're never too old to chase your dreams.
  3. It looks like a solitary sport, but it's a team.

Millions of people around the world cheered this maverick on, moved by her undeniable tenacity to be the first to make the historic crossing without the aid of a shark cage. At the end of her magnificent journey, after 35 years and four crushing failures, the public found hope in Diana's perseverance. They were inspired by her mantra - find a way - that led her to realize a dream in her 60s that had eluded her as a young champion in peak form.

In Find a Way, Diana engages us with a unique, passionate story of this heroic adventure and the extraordinary life experiences that have served to carve her unwavering spirit.

Diana was a world champion in her 20s, setting the record for swimming around Manhattan Island along with other ocean-swim achievements, all of which rendered her a star at the time. Back then, she made the first attempt at the Mount Everest of swims, the Cuba Swim, but after 42 hours and 79 miles she was blown desperately off course. Her dream unfulfilled, she didn't swim another stroke for three decades.

Critic Reviews

"Hearing [Nyad] tell her story in her own words adds another dimension to the endeavor, and the listener feels her single-minded dedication to her goal. Her description of the challenging circumstances she overcame early in her life is jarring, and makes her achievements even more impressive. Nyad also gives the listener glimpses of her mind while swimming by singing the songs that help her to maintain her stroke, counting in various languages, and yelping when stung by jellyfish." A crazy, inspirational woman!

I am a Nyad groupie, so this was a must-listen for me. Nyad telling her own story is key to this book, I think. Even though I have followed all of her attempts on-line, and seen the video of her finish several times, hearing her read about this moment still made me teary. Nyad is the most impressive example I know, other than Holocaust survivors of putting mind over matter and staying focused on your goals. Onward!

So Very Inspiring!

This is one of the most amazing stories I’ve ever listened to! It inspired me to keep living life to the fullest and to not give into doubt. If you need a good story that will kickstart your inertia this is it! I loved the fact that Diana narrated it herself. It made it an even more personal account.

Fabulous

Awe inspiring book. I have followed her endeavors over the years and was ecstatic over her finish. For my 70th year I am planning a 10 mile swim - a mere sprint compared to Diana’s swim but she gives me the courage and the will. Thank you Diana. I am glad you wrote the book. Hints, lessons, and encouragement!
