Publisher's Summary

Take your speaking, listening, and comprehension to the next level. You will master 200 of the most useful phrases that are beyond the basics you learn in basic Spanish classes.

Often what we learn in class isn’t very useful in practicable speech, so we’ve compiled a list of 200 of the most widely used common expressions and phrases that will supercharge your Spanish speaking ability, as well as your vocabulary and comprehension.

This book will provide you with an amazing supply of simple, incredibly useful Spanish phrases (most of which you probably haven’t mastered yet), to help take your conversation skills to the next level.

This book also contains numerous idioms and colloquialisms which you will find both insightful and useful. Hispanic culture is incredibly colorful and each region has numerous local sayings and idioms, so we’ll only focus on really common ones that seem to be pretty universal across all Spanish speaking countries.

You will learn:

  • The English and Spanish version of the idiom/phrase
  • The explanation of how to use this idiom or phrase in common speech and when is an appropriate time to use it
  • Examples of casual dialogue in both Spanish and English to show you the context of how this phrase is used
  • You can practice repeating each phrase to help commit it to memory and work through the pronunciation

Slow, Slow, Slow, Slow, Slow

Listening to this was painful. Everything was spoken so slowly, I felt that I was listening to some sort of bizarre Saturday Night Live skit. I thought that perhaps the speaker was trying to be careful for the beginner listeners, but even the English was slow. I changed the audible playback to 1.5x and it became tolerable. Even the most basic of things were repeated multiple times, even in the slow motion world of this audio book. If you are a beginner, this molasses in January approach may be to your liking, seriously.

Also, I would not call this intermediate. I've been studying Spanish for about 10 years as a hobby. For most of that time, I've considered myself as intermediate. When I listen to advanced level lessons, I usually have trouble. Most of this audio book I would consider basic. As an example, it was either in the 2nd or 3rd chapter, she went over "Cómo estás? Bien, y tú?"

Finally, while I'm not a native Spanish speaker, by now I pretty much know what basic Spanish pronunciation is supposed to sound like. This audio book is verbally presented by a native English speaker. Her Spanish pronunciation was off in many basic ways. I'm OK with native English speakers teaching Spanish, but you have to get the basics of the pronunciation correct. Emphasizing the wrong syllable can change the meaning of a word, and it was done many times.

I could tell the author put a lot of effort into this book, but it appears she did it without test runs being checked by a native Spanish speaker, so that she could get the techniques down right before using the wrong ones throughout the entire book.

Sorry, I can't recommend this audio book. I hope others have more success with it than I had.

Done right!

This Spanish lesson is simple and instructive. It contains real spoken Spanish that I can use. I wish all Spanish programs would copy from this example. Slow is how I learn. Common speech is what I want and need to learn. Great job, producers, please make more!

Slow pronunciations

A little to slow with pronunciations. Clear but too drawn out not realistic when spoken.
