Publisher's summary

Burn brightly. Love fiercely. For all else is dust.

Every child of Glasnith learns the last words of Aillira, the god-gifted mortal whose doomed love affair sparked a war of gods and men, and Lira of clan Stone knows the story better than most. As a descendant of Aillira and god-gifted in her own right, she has the power to read people's souls, to see someone's true essence with only a touch of her hand.

When a golden-haired warrior washes up on the shores of her homeland - one of the fearful marauders from the land of the Frozen Sun - Lira helps the wounded man instead of turning him in. After reading his soul, she realizes Reyker is different than his brethren who attack the coasts of Glasnith. He confides in her that he's been cursed with what his people call battle-madness, forced to fight for the warlord known as the Dragon, a powerful tyrant determined to reignite the ancient war that Aillira started.

As Lira and Reyker form a bond forbidden by both their clans, the wrath of the Dragon falls upon them and all of Glasnith, and Lira finds herself facing the same tragic fate as her ancestor. The battle for Lira's life, for Reyker's soul, and for their peoples' freedom has only just begun....

I really enjoyed this story and narration!

This was a great story imo. The love story well developed by there was much strife and tribulation throughout the whole book. I will definitely listen to the next book as well!

Super solid and compelling book.

A great read, I managed to burn through it pretty quick on my commute. The voice acting is a little hard to get behind sometimes but it was really enjoyable. Outstanding piece of work Jill-o.

half of a story

I genuinely loved the story but i felt it was rushed to be told and because of that a lot of characterization is lost. It's a beautiful world but I wish we learned more detail to really fall in love with the characters.

Narration is a little weird, but good story

I enjoyed this story, and will be seeking out the next in line. The male narrator I found to be a bit jarring. He read so fast and with so much urgency... It seemed unnatural compared to the female narrator. I had hoped that the male narrator would have done the male voices, but they each did the other characters voices for their own parts... The male narrators depiction of female voices was corny.

This ended my listening rut, I LOVED it!

I was in a bit of a listening rut. In some ways it feels like if you've heard or read one fantasy/adventure story, you've heard or read them all. This story was really enjoyable. In many ways it was typical of the genre, but the characters were great and I cared about them quite early on. I can't wait to start the next in this series.

Sooooo good

I listen to tons of books and this is my first review because I just had to say how good it was! I was really unsure about whether I’d like this book or not in the beginning but it was so good the entire time and kept my in the edge of my seat

Decent listen

I don’t plan to listen to the sequels. I don’t care enough about the world and the characters to spend more time, but I don’t regret the time I spent.

I wouldn't recommend

Had potential but the bad stuff that happens to the main characters just keeps getting worse... They are completely powerless in every situation and with a ton of luck manage to keep going that's it that's the book. Oh and the male narrators voice is not for me.

Unspoken elements of mythology

Without a word you were dragged kicking and screaming into the playing field of gods that inhabit the very fabric of existence that surrounds you. This is a tale of ancient clans steeped in a battle that plays out through generations of struggle. It leaves you wondering if the gods hover, laughing at the decisions of mortals for their own entertainment. It makes me want to see how this history plays out. You will not be able to put the book down once you start listening or reading. The names and vocabulary is ancient and yet easily understood so not once does the reader have to wonder what’s going on. This story reminds me of so many things and yet nothing I’ve ever heard before. Well done!
