Publisher's summary

Marine Corporal Sean Nichols is wounded in a devastating ambush that takes the lives of his three friends and leaves him an amputee. If not for the heroism of his sergeant, Deke Tilman, who pulled him out of the road, Sean would have surely died with his fire team. With the help of Deke, Sean now embarks on his next mission - recuperate from his serious injuries, and visit the families of his fallen comrades as he tries to make peace with such profound loss. Battle Scars is a thought-provoking drama with compelling characters that illustrates the resiliency and strength of the human spirit, the power of love and friendship, and the ability to overcome even our darkest moments. Gritty realism and original storytelling breathe life into Battle Scars as it inspires us with a surprising tale of heroism and the great sacrifice made by our modern war fighters.

One of the most immersive and heatfelt war books

Where does Battle Scars rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm relatively new to audiobooks, but this was one of the most amazing books I've read or listened to in my entire life. I'm shipping off to train to be a Combat Medic in the US Army in just a few weeks so this book really hit home. Mr. Salkin really knew how to approach the subject. I really liked the character Sergeant Deke, as that's the kind of guy I hope to be, in terms of being able to project a winning attitude into others, even when they think there's no hope left.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Battle Scars?

After the book sets out to immerse you in the lifestyle and psyche of the marines deployed in Afghanistan, the book diverts into the personal relationships between the soldiers and their own thoughts and struggles, sealing them in the iron-clad brotherhood that develops between "battle buddies," in a warzone. I don't want to spoil anymore of the book, but if you have read titles such as Soldier X or Fallen Angels, you'll know what I mean when I say this book gets really emotional, and I found myself tearing up during several parts of the narration.

Have you listened to any of John Alan Martinson Jr. and Phoenix T. Clark ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Martinson did an excellent job exhibiting the emotion of the dialogue between the characters in the book, as well as the general and dynamic atmosphere in the narration. If Clark was the female nurse in the book, it really adds to the contrast of environments that she is featured in, so it adds a really nice touch which maintains the immersion of the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried some, chuckled some, and felt like I was really there the whole time.

Any additional comments?

I'm glad titles like this are out there, so that people can gather some level of insight as to what our veterans have gone through; much respect to the author and narrator.

An Honorable Service to Wounded Veterans

Mr. Salkin has done an exceptional job of capturing the inner-battle that goes on in the mind of a man who has lost close friends, while also illustrating the physical anguish of having been severely wounded. He has written a character that you feel for, and that you want to get to know; this is a character that you want to hug tightly and say, "It's going to be okay."

I don't think enough writing has been done on wounded veterans, but I am happy to see such a talented writer has taken up the challenge to tell this difficult and important story.

A salute to David. M. Salkin. Thank you.

Outstanding

The is an amazing story of a single veteran and his struggle to overcome the pain of transition. Our country asks a lot of our veterans and while this is one story, there are hundreds of thousands out there who struggle. Thank you David for shedding some light on one story!

A heartwrenching story

This performance was simply exceptional. Mr. Martinson did a great job bringing the characters to life and Mr. Salkin's writing is just outstanding. I could see this story as a movie, and I think it really needs to be.
