The last "good" before it gets "great"

When rereading this book I found myself getting impatient for the next one. Don't get me wrong, there are some good bits. Our first ascensions and orbital bombardments, for example. But aside from seeing a new world and some new characters, this book feels like too much of a bridge between one and three.

One big thing: SENKA. As much as I loved seeing the hidden meanings this reread, I remember how much I hated her the first time around. If anyone thinks she's an annoying mascot character, just wait... the payoff later is pretty amazing.

But that's kind of the problem with this book. Too many of the pieces are setup and not enough are payoff. It's still pretty fun overall, it just pales in comparison to the others.

As for the performance, Baldree is still GOAT.

Great story and performance

An excellent continuation that builds perfectly on the first book's foundation while leaving room for many more adventures to come. Very excited to see how Theo's skills grow.

love the soul home system for magic. I wish the books were a little longer but its a nice taste.

Another great book in the weir key chronicle series with great narration by Travis Baldree.

Needs to be longer

It is decent story and I love the world however the story needs to be longer and include a bit more growth on soulhome powers. Honestly I will drop the series if book 3 is not longer its just not worth the credit to spend on anything less than 9 hours.

This series deserves a lot more attention than it is currently getting. The characters are great, the magic system is so refreshing and unique, and the setting is expansive and interesting.

The author has kindly agreed to put the first three books on audible no matter what, but because it's an expensive process is not sure she can do more unless the series does well.

Please support the author so she can continue this fantastic series and help provide motivation for future books!

Amazing story and concept!

This world just continues to grow and inspire me further! Sarah Lin must have a truly fascinating mind.

And if course, Baldree is perfect and we all love him.

Disappointing Sequel

I enjoyed the first book of the series, and I was hoping the second book would work out some of the kinks in the story. However, I feel like Rainhorn made me overall less interested in the series.

Soulhome made it clear that this would be a story with stakes and constant pursuers, one where a mad scramble to get as strong as possible as quickly as possible was needed to survive. It finished off strong, and leading into this book I anticipated some clever actions from the protagonists to bypass the normal slow process by any means necessary.

Instead, the second book follows a very slow, standard path for progression. I typically prefer a slower progression series, but with the setup in this series it feels like a lot of time is being wasted when extremely powerful pursuers could show up at any minute. The beats are very repetitive, much moreso than the first book. By the fourth or fifth time the rich rival characters showed up I was very tired of the same thing happening again and again with no real forward momentum. The climax itself is solved by the protagonists using the same techniques they used in previous encounters with the same enemies but better this time, which I found very lackluster.

I hope this series finds its stride in later books, as I find the setting interesting and I'm a fan of another of the author's works.

Absolutamente Fantástica!

Absolutely fantastic novel in a series we want to read more of! Sarah Lin has a good thing going once again.
We are getting deeper into the thinking of the main characters and their relationships. A fun new character who adds mystery to the story is Senka. Either people like her or find her irritating. First I read the book, and found the questions as they were puzzling over her background intriguing. Now, enter Travis Baldree! He does the coolest job of giving the characters different voices, and blending the conversations so well, you would really think there are several people in the studio talking together. The voice and conversation with Senka's childlike manner just made me laugh and laugh. As with Sarah Lin's other novels, this series is worth a second read/hearing as it is rich and has a lot of nuance.
