First Person Court?

Gentry’s first person narration was jarring. I don’t want to know his insecurities and negative self-talk—heck, I don’t want to know mine. Odysseus’ narration is part of his hero’s journey, but Gentry isn’t on a journey—he’s on missions to do the impossible, to right wrongs regardless of the odds. It is harder to suspend disbelief when hearing the hero’s inner dialogue. That said, Greaney makes it work; I kept reading (listening). Jay Snyder is another hero: superb, nuanced characters stay consistent from scene to scene through his steady and intuitive narration.

Totally plausible story lines and very well developed.Loved the complimentary narration as well! Snyder does a great job....THE GRAY MAN RULES!

Different, but different is good

I hesitated listening to this book because of the love or hate reviews on the different style. But I’m so glad I relented and got it. One Minute Out was great. When the first person narration started I instantly thought of the movie Sin City when Mickey Rourke’s character (Marv) was narrating the action. I had no problem going back and forth between the two styles. Without first person, we wouldn’t get great lines like “talking isn’t my strong suit, that’s why I tend to shoot people in the face.” I don’t know if people in Jay Schneider’s line of work win awards, but he should get one. And the description of the helicopter ride to the ranch, intense. I’m sorry that people didn’t like the 1st person style. I enjoyed it because I always think Court doesn’t talk enough and I like his humor and understated style. I guess the book did get a little preachy at times and maybe just a little sappy. But Court isn’t a robot, and this book shows it. It was great. So good.

I LOVE the first person narrative

I almost didn't buy this book because of all the negative comments about the change of style. I really don't understand why. You get right into The Grey Man's mind like never before. You feel the anger more intensely and see the methodology of the operations in finer detail.

Don't be discouraged by the purists! If you love the Grey Man series you will NOT be disappointed. Quite the opposite.

Different format, same Gentry!

While some don't like the first person narrative used in portions of the book, I didn't mind it much at all. The transitions were clear and the thought process behind the narrative was well executed. As always, Gentry is a bad ass who does take a few injuries along the way. Already looking forward to the next book! Keep them coming and keep Jay Snyder as the narrator!
