Publisher's summary

A thrilling medieval with a pinch of paranormal!

An English Knight....
Sir Braden de Bremont guards his secret gift, keeping others at arm's length, trusting no one outside of his family. When he's injured during a mission in Berwick, Scotland, he's forced to remain until he heals, while protecting a lady from a powerful lord determined to kill her family as a warning to others with English ties.

A Scottish Lady....
Lady Ilisa Douglas is haunted by the terrible events she witnessed during the attack on Berwick when thousands were killed. She now trusts no one, especially English knights. Yet the exact kind of man she's learned to fear is the only one who steps forward to protect her from a murderous plot. Secretive yet bold, handsome and strong, Braden has Ilisa questioning all she once believed with his gentle embrace and passionate kisses.

An irresistible temptation....
In order to expose the lord willing to kill for his cause, Braden and Ilisa agree to marry in name only to attend the lord's upcoming gathering. Feigning the part of an attentive husband to the beautiful lady who tempts him with her cautious smiles and tender touch is no hardship for Braden but makes it nearly impossible to keep his secret. Ilisa knows more than her heart is at stake in this terrible game, for if they fail, the King of England will march again on Scotland.

Nice Story

The story is interesting although now I feel the need to get the back story to it. the characters develop nicely as the story goes on. You watch them gradually fall in love. I was not a huge fan of the narrator as he didn't do a female voice all that well nor dis I feel like his voice changed much between when he read as the narrator and Sir Braden. This of course is my opinion and others may think he's great. It's a personal thing. I would definitely read more my this author.

Scottish & English Tensions + Romance - Adult Read

Parents- R - This is an Adult Romance
Language- PG13- very little, no f-bombs
Violence- PG13 - Knights and battles but not overly graphic
Sexual Content- R- Detailed bedroom scenes

I really enjoyed the storyline to this one! It has a touch of history (fighting/tensions between England and Scotland), there's an element of mystery and then spying that makes this more entertaining and a bit unique for the genre. I didn't read the first book in the series and although I am sure it's better in order it didn't cause me any issues, so it can be read as a stand alone. This is an adult read with the detailed bedroom scenes but for those that like the steamy romance books this is a good one with some fun action.

Narrator- Has a pleasant voice and does a decent job, has some good differentiation with a few of the characters, the sound quality has some fluctuations like it was recorded over in spots. Not fond of the "end of chapter" announcements each time. I preferred listening at 1.35x speed.

Standalone but a continuation of Book 1

This review is for the audio book. This is book 2 of the series and although 90% can be read as a standalone, it is an immediate continuation of the first book. The book starts off with the H injured and the h caring for him. there is little more background given to the characters or how they got there. After a bit, the story is a standalone but I recommend reading the books in order. I didn't read them immediately one after another and even I was lost. I took off a star for that. The author is a wonderful writer and her stories are well developed and have a nice plot with suspense and romance. I just feel like one more chapter's worth of words reviewing the characters could have gone far.

Great story

I enjoyed the mixture of historical events with author created characters and a touch of paranormal. The characters were well written and the narration was very good. Some graphic sex but not overdone.

A fine place to start; now I must read the rest!

Even though I haven't yet read the first book in this series (A Knight's Quest) or the introductory novella (A Knight's Christmas Wish) this book drew me in right away to Braden and Ilisa's story. There's all kinds of good things going on here--an enemies-to-lovers vibe, protector/protectee romance, a temporary marriage, espionage, and a hint of magic. I'm not at all familiar with the historical events that surround the trilogy, but it didn't matter--this is one heck of a story, and I can't wait to get to the others!

I listened to the audiobook version, which was enjoyable--the narrator had the odd habit of announcing the end of the chapter (by number, nonetheless), pausing rather dramatically, and then announcing the new chapter, which was a bit odd but I got used to it. He had a nice accent, though, and didn't go overboard trying to make different voices which can sometimes backfire. I'd definitely listen to him again.

Rating: 4 stars / A-

Wonderful story

This was such a good story. Lady Ilisa Douglas witnessed the brutality of English soldiers to her village but circumstances lead to her and her brother caring for an injured English soldier, Sir Braden de Bremont, who comes to her rescue during an attempt on her life. They get to know each other during his convalescence and are attracted to each other. She is not aware of a hidden gift that Braden hides. Ilisa and Braden agree to marry in name only in order to expose the Lord willing to kill her. Their marriage started in name only, but during their ruse, their feelings deepen.

This was a slow burn attraction between two unlikely people. Very good story telling, very good narration.
