From the #1 internationally bestselling author of Strange Sally Diamond and Unraveling Oliver—a brilliantly plotted, utterly immersive novel lauded by A.J. Finn—#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window—as “extraordinary…crackles and snaps like a bonfire on a winter’s night.”

My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it.

On the surface, Lydia Fitzsimons's life seems idyllic. Her husband, Andrew, is a prosperous, respected judge; they live in the spacious, comfortable, well-appointed house where she was raised. And she is utterly, obsessively devoted to her son, Laurence—her adored only child, her pride and joy.

But Andrew's murder of Annie Doyle, accidental or not, sets into motion a dark downward spiral. It doesn’t take long for Laurence to suspect that something is very, very wrong in the Fitzsimons household—and he is determined to discover the truth.

For fans of Ruth Ware and Gillian Flynn, Lying in Wait is “a devastating psychological thriller...an exquisitely uncomfortable, utterly captivating reading experience” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

The narrator for Karen was impossible to hear unless you had the volume cranked. I get what the author was trying to do when she re-told events through each perspective, but ultimately, it just repetitive and boring. The story was predictable and the ending left you wondering why so much time was spent talking about Annie when she wasn't even mentioned in the end.

Boring, repetitive

This is second book I've read by this author...excellent! Narrator(s) and character development outstanding. Psychological thrillers are a go-to genre for me because, if well-written and narrated, they are an entertaining and compelling distraction. Liz Nugent succeeds at this! She nails sociopath/personality disorders perfectly (Unraveling Oliver another one of her books)...eerily perfectly. Well done!

Mommie Dearest

This book is in my top 10 fiction. I will always recommend this book. The mother was a cold, calculating psycho. Poor Lar didn't stand a chance with a mom like her. The narration was excellent also.

This ending left me speechless. What a great story! It's the kind of ending that leaves you in utter and complete shock. I'm still thinking about it hours after I finished.

Wow!!

Sometimes a book can get ruined by the narrators and this happens to be the case here. I think the story is really probably good. I got the physical book to finish instead.

I just couldn’t get into the story with these narrators

I very quickly connected to the characters in this story. There were very good plot turns and suspenseful moments. The end completely ruined my listening experience. Waste of time.

Terrible ending

Can't say much more than whoa without a spoiler, but this is a vicious, twisted little gem of a novel. Enjoy it.

I gave this 4 stars overall because it is well-written, but t I just didn't like it. It is extremely slow and tedious (at times), with the tendency I've noticed among Irish writers to go into far more detail than is necessary about unnecessary things. It's not a crime novel or a horror novel or a thriller. It's just a psychological portrait of three people in which a murder or two plays a role. The entire focus is on how she recreates their inner lives, as told through three points of view, and in that respect it is a completely average story and performance. The people are not wildly interesting. They never deeply engaged my emotions. Everything was told in a flat, emotionless way, even though it touches upon what could and should be very powerful subjects. It all blended into a monotone soup.
Not enough tension to the plot; not enough horror when there should have been; not enough sadness when there should have been; not enough shock or surprise. Even the one truly evil figure was forgettable. The evil of her actions simply was not conveyed strongly enough.
I listened to half the book, then skipped to the last few chapters, knowing exactly what would happen. I don't feel like I missed anything at all. It came highly recommended so it was disappointing.
Two of the narrators are great; the one who performed Karen was horrible.

Too Restrained
