This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of Underland, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers - precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Would you consider the audio edition of Splintered to be better than the print version?

Yes! IHonestly, I can not imagine reading this story now without Rebecca Gibel's amazing narration. Her voice was spot on for each character - and that's saying something since there's quite an array of characters. She made me feel like I was listening to multiple narrators when, in reality, it was her alone. Her voicing of Jeb made me swoon each time while her voicing of some of the creepy characters gave me the chills. I never once lost interest as Rebecca spun this wickedly inventive adventure with appropriate pauses, accents, and changes in tone and pacing that served to hold my rapt attention.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Splintered?

I loved Alyssa's tabletop performance at the Tea Party! LOL! Jeb enjoyed it also!

Have you listened to any of Rebecca Gibel’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've not listened to any other books by Rebecca but I plan to listen to the next two books in this series soon and I'm so glad that Rebecca is narrating them also!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wish I could have! It was an audible that I didn't want to stop...

Any additional comments?

A.G. Howard has woven an incredibly chaotic world of quirky characters where there are no rules. If you loved Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a child, you should try Howard's captivating, amusing, macabre new version! You will be amazed at the author's creativity. I was particularly mesmerized by the rhymes she re-made! I highly recommend SPLINTERED to anyone who enjoys exciting, engaging, and entertaining fractured fairy tales.

This was a fun read. It won't go down as a favorite but I did really enjoy it. I liked the spin off of Alice in Wonderland. I found it unpredictable and interesting. I would recommend it as a rebound book. You know, after you get done with that series you've been engrossed with and neglected your friends and family for. This is a good rebound book to get you out of that funk.

I really love the story, it wasn't what I was expecting. I'm a big Alice in Wonderland fan and I love how it had aspects of that yet it totally went its own way. cannot wait to listen to the next two. I am a security guard and I listen to these while doing Patrols..makes the night go much faster. I think the narrator did a great job considering how many different voices she had to do and how well she did them. I enjoyed it.

great plot

Would have been an excellent retelling I liked how they used alot from the wonderland book but Jeb really ruined the book by being controlling jealous and creepy and her inability to make her own decisions and hot head attitude really ruins the story

Fell short

I tend to read YA books so that I don't have to endure so much of those types of scenes.
This one had a great storyline and fun plot twists. It is an intense and dark fairytale.
My only issue with this story was the intense sexual tension between the main character and two different men. It became an overbearing part of the story by about the middle of the book.

A bit racier than I was expecting...
