Publisher's summary

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police.

As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

Narrator kind of ruined it...

I really wanted to like this book. All in all, it wasn’t bad. But the narrator is not good at making the characters relatable. Half the time Marybeth talked it sounded sarcastic. I’m hesitant to continue with this series knowing the same narrator will be a part of it...

looking forward to the evolution of this character

As a fan of the Longmire novels I kept hearing about this writer and series. I didn't find it as fun or immersive as Johnson's Longmire but it's a really well done first outing. I'm glad I started at the beginning. I have a lot of good listening ahead of me. The performance of the narrative was almost flawless.

THERE SHOULD BE MORE THAN 5 STARS

What a delightful book. New and interesting involvement with an endangered species. Love Joe Pickett, game warden, looking forward to more on him. This book has it all: a good mystery, murder, great family, animals, children, endangered species. The last 3 hours are absolutely nail biters. If I was reading a actual book I would the page ready to turn before I was done reading that page. And David Chandler was magnificent

Decent enough to be entertaining

This is an older Joe Pickett novel, and tends to get a bit too wordy and drags out here and there. However, the story is still worthwhile entertainment and CJ Box has improved a lot in later efforts. Still, I'd recommend this book as perfectly listenable and decent entertainment. After all, we need to support guys like Joe Pickett.

Review Open Season

I did not like all the cursing, most especially cursing God. It has so much violence. I will not read another for that reason.

Good Book

One of my favourite narrators. Writing is airways good. Story line provocative. The pattern is the same for most of Joe Picket' s stories. Don't poke the bear
