Virgil Bonaventure is a young, handsome, almost successful poker player in the Free City of Bruxumburg, home to one of nine major train stations in “the Land of the Iron Lions,” a world of adventure where classic genres get mixed and mingled.
Virgil grew up as an orphan, living on and under the streets, where he was adopted by the Red Handed Urchins, a band of child rogues. His good looks and charm gained him access to the upper crust of society, despite his past.
One night, competing in a big-money tournament onboard a riverboat casino, Virgil makes a play that instantly changes his life forever. Now, he is on the run from powerful interests on all sides. A giant trade conglomerate; organized crime; ruthless detectives; and a werewolf or three are after him and are willing to pay to capture him.
He finds himself in a deadly chase, confronting evils he never knew existed, in a threatening wilderness called the Unserved. He has few friends, nowhere welcoming to flee, and slim chances of survival. But, he's got an ace up his sleeve.
Sounds like just the sort of hand for which an impetuous gambler might go all in.
