A less than stellar mix

I wasn't a big fan of the story of the motion picture of The Last Jedi, so there was no doubt I wouldn't like the story of the book. It is also inevitable that the two are to be compared. There are many scenes in this book that are not in the theatrical edit of the movie. That scenes go a long way towards improving the more questionable parts of the movie, I found these parts to be the most enjoyable. Especially the first chapter, which is a dream Luke has - this was for me, by far the best chapter in the book.

The writing I found to be rather bland. I can't count the about of times I heard the word "ebb", and conversations often literally devolved into "he said", "she said" - rather than finding more dynamic ways to concetly to the reader who is speaking a particular sentence. When large portions of the book are dialogue, this can be rather difficult to get through.

The voice actor however, was fantastic. His narrator voice seemed spot on all of the time, and all of the characters from the movie sounded almost identical to the actual people. Especially Luke, Poe and Finn. His Luke impression was flawless.

So this is a tough one for me. I strongly disliked the story in general, and the book can't be blamed for that. I think the new scenes and the extra "in universe" facts that Canon books bring to the table definitely made this book worth the buy.

I found the expression. by the artist great a d imagined being in front of a fire enraptured being told a great story but.....his character voices were not great. don't try an English accent (rey) unless you can do it. tough ask , I know. but could have been direct better. overall o enjoyed a lot

Please stop mispronouncing freight

Everything else was good, the narrator wouldn't stop mispronouncing freight. Annoyed me more than it should have.

Beautiful story

Amazing entry into the Star Wars universe. Such humanity in the characters. Gets a bit flabby around the middle with the casino planet but isn't a huge detraction.

A very good and faithful translation to book

Any additional comments?

I find this book version, not only a good translation of the film to written/spoken word, but fills out many of the characters' thoughts and feelings in so many places. I agree that this (like the Force Awakens book) is better than the film for the character development and situational analysis. References to earlier episodes in the film series are accurate and help. Marc Thompson does an excellent job of voicing the many parts, and really gets into the story - I found I was riding along with him on many occasions.

The only jarring issue I have with it is the gratuitous Prologue. This, in my opinion, adds nothing to the story, and jars because its references to earlier film episodes are often wrong! (It implies a very limited involvement of Luke Skywalker with Oban Kanobi, even to his not knowing what happened to Kanobi.) But don't let this put you off an excellent yarn in the Star Wars series. Definitely 5 stars all round.

If the movie isn’t for you the book is much better

I would say that the book is better then the film and is Worthing having the listen too. Goes in t much more detail the what the movie could do. Not saying that the movie is bad not any where near as bad as phantom Menace. In my opinion I like the movie and the book. I just think us Star Wars fans can be a bit fickle sometimes. I used one of my free book credits to get this book but would be well worth the money

Really well put together and performed

The reader is very good at the character voices and plenty of real star wars sound effects. Extra scenes that didn't make the movie too.

solid story

as a massive Star Wars fan who knows the timelines, this story is a bit disappointing..
but.. as a new franchise it is a solid story and the book explains far better than the movie.
