Publisher's summary

"One of the hardest things we'll ever attempt to do is love people who ignore us - or who even actively despise us. Do you see why Jesus' commands to love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, and do good to those who would do evil to us, remains so low in priority on our life's 'To Do' list? It is painful just to think that we must love people who consider us so rotten. No sane person would put themselves through an emotional meat grinder, by embracing such a goal. No sane person would strive to do as Jesus commands. No sane person would leap the wall that protects our flimsy self from destruction, and show such vulnerability and meekness to the conniving and deceitful world, ruled by Satan. And so we must choose the apparent 'insanity of God, and choose to be vulnerable, and truly loving, even though this will, most certainly, bring us pain." This quote came from Advanced Christianity.

This book you are considering is filled with teaching, as above, that takes you beyond the Sunday school class, beyond the sermon preached, and into the areas of the heart and mind that need to grasp how important Jesus' teaching was, given while he lived on earth. We can't even love Jesus without considering his teachings because he said, "If you love me, follow my commands."

Don't worry if some of the teachings in this book seem impossible. With God, all things are possible. He, through his holy Spirit, will give you the power to accomplish his commands. Prayer opens the communication with God, allowing him to instruct and empower you to do as he asks. As you pray, he tells you how.

This book tells you why you'd want to do such a thing. I pray it is a blessing to you.

Thoughts on how Christians can and should grow

Yet another original and profound challenge to followers of Christ from author Vic Zarley. There are 40 chapters ranging in size from 3 minutes to 23 minutes making this a good daily devotional. You can tell the author has spent a lifetime soaking up and meditating on God's Word and reconciling it's truths with the many questions that suffering people in this fallen and sin cursed world always have. What is the purpose of our life? of our suffering? What is God's mission for me? How do I truly "love my enemies"? What must I do versus what do I let God do through me? Why settle for less than God's best for us (spiritual not material btw)? There is enough biblically derived "meat" in most chapters that I would recommend pausing and digesting each one before moving on to get maximum benefit to your own inner life with Jesus. This would also be a good Bible study for any open minded spiritual seekers of truth, parents, families, small groups, and/or a book club discussion. Note: As with any Christian author, not all will agree with 100% his theological thoughts, but I can tell you that he's a sincere, humble, Bible believing Christian thinker whose books are worthy material for anyone sincerely seeking a deeper experience with God. Disclosure: I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading/listening to this book. Shawn Loy, Austin, IN
