Publisher's Summary

Understanding addiction is no longer just about understanding neurons or genes, broken brain functioning, learning, or faulty choices. Oliver J. Morgan provides a fresh take on addiction and recovery by presenting a more inclusive framework than traditional understanding. Cutting-edge work in attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, and trauma is integrated with ecological-systems thinking to provide a consilient and comprehensive picture of addiction.

Humans are born into connection and require nourishing relationships for healthy living. Adversities, however, bring fragmentation and create the conditions for ill health. They create vulnerabilities. In order to cope, individuals can turn to alternatives, "substitute relationships" that ease the pain of disconnection. These can become addictions.

Addiction, Attachment, Trauma, and Recovery presents a model, a method, and a mandate. This new focus calls for change in the established ways we think and behave about addiction and recovery. It reorients understanding and clinical practice for mental health and addiction counselors, psychologists, and social workers, as well as for addicts and those who love them.

Good info but stretched out way too long

There is definitely some good information in this audiobook however a lot of it is repetitive - the book probably could’ve been half the length

This is a must read to fully understand the complexities of addiction. Only then, as a society, can we take effective action. (psycgologist)

I wish I had written this book!

As a doctor working in this field covering prisons and a rehabilitation centre I found this a brilliant overview of the neurobiological social spiritual and mental health forces that drive Addiction. I greatly enjoyed the deep dives into eg cellular biology and the analysis of social strategies to improve outcomes. It has given me many courses to pause for thought and offered illumination that I can share with patients for example the “tend and be friend” When struggling with aroused emotions instead of moving to fight or flight. I found it very listenable to and that it offers above all else hope for individuals and for a society with far too much pain and far Too many prescriptions in the place of good loving care. Thank you for taking the time to write and to narrate this !book!

Interesting but more suited to professionals

The book was very interesting and extremely informative but is definitely better suited for practitioners than lay people looking for solutions. It is highly technical and can be a bit overwhelming when trying to use the information practically as a non practitioner.
