Resumen del Editor

A conversational and practical guide to the next level of professional development.

Louis Cozolino, one of our most compelling clinical writers, takes us inside the mind and heart of a seasoned therapist, carrying on the tradition of personal and professional writing begun in The Making of a Therapist. This book discusses some of the more abstract concepts and ways of interacting with clients, such as relaxed curiosity, finding the secret ally, and discovering the deep narrative. Also addressed are clinical concepts such as related states of mind, the process of change, free-floating attention, and listening with the third ear.

More than just theoretical commentary, the book offers concrete clinical advice for the experienced therapist and brings a fresh perspective to some of the most current clinical challenges, including the complexities of executive functioning; treating clients with internet addiction; and taking responsibility for your continued personal growth, clinical supervision, and education after leaving school.

Every book Cozolino makes is great.

I’m a new therapist and this one reminded of the ideas I need to incorporate with my new clients. It also added a ton of new research based ideas. I’m a super fan now.

Great for new and seasoned therapists alike!

I love Cozolino's ability to marry neuroscience and psychotherapy without reducing us to simplebrainchemicals

Very Practical

Wish I would have heard about this book while in Grad School. It would have helped forge the path.

Practical advice from a seasoned therapist

I enjoyed the sound, easily digestible advice that usually comes from a trusted mentor. The author gives a thorough overview of what the profession entails and how to succeed as a practitioner.

Sequel to my favourite book on therapy

The Making of a Therapist is a book I highly recommend. Reading it was like reliving the first 10 years of my therapy career, Lou Cozolino manages to sum up most of the hard lessons I learnt through experience and mistakes in that easy to read/listen to primer.
The Development of a Therapist takes it a step further, it develops a number of ideas further, digs a deeper and casts the net wider. A fitting follow up.
I enjoyed the later chapter on the internet, it raised a few ideas and angles I hadn’t thought of before, pointed out research I have yet to read, though I was a little disappointed it didn’t dig deeper into the pros and cons of online therapy, but now we have COVID-19 and the rules have changed anyway. The only section of the book I felt was really lacking was the one on Attachment Based Parenting. As someone with a strong interest in Attachment Theory, like Cozolino I have concerns about Attachment Based Parenting, which it could be said takes some pretty big liberties with Attachment Theory and arguably twists the ideas of Attachment into unboundaried permissiveness. I was hoping this section would provide evidence for my own skepticism about this style of parenting, but that section, unlike most of his work, seems to be more opinion than his typical research-based reasoning. These however would be my only criticisms of this book, and they are small ones.
The narrator is the same from The Making of, despite the accent I really enjoyed his reading - it feels like he is reading his own material, the emphases and delivery seems spot on and it is consistently engaging.

Virtual Awareness

Exceptional information about consumer based competencies in ethical investments involving higher educations. A worthy example of weighing costs and benefits of living.

Excellent!

I am going to listen again and take notes. I bought a hard copy for my therapist. It’s very well written!

"Awful, Distracting Voice "

The content is likely decent and insightful, but the voice for narration is awful and distracting. Whose idea was that?!

Unnecessary

Unfortunately, I’m not sure who needs this book. Nothing in here I didn’t learn in grad school. It seemed self-indulgent. Some chapters have nothing to do with developing psychotherapeutic skills.
