Great story! Wish there were more. Wish it had been longer. Can't wait for the next one.

When "No Talent" is treated as an invitation

Larry Correia is one of my favorite authors and he demonstrates why in this story. The MC is a young adolescent who has zero magical talent yet; yearns to become a mage anyway. His quest starts where he is a lowly indentured servant miner digging for magical essence used by mages to perform spells. While he has proven to have zero magical talents, he relentlessly and recklessly attempts to perform even the lowliest of spells and ended in a destructive explosion that nearly cost him his life. Undeterred, his life was was forever changed after being attacked by some haughty elven pirates. From there he sets out to become a true mage and seek his revenge.

I enjoyed the book due to its consistent pacing and devoid of lengthy stat bane.

Garrett Michael Brown's performance was quite good.

An Excellent, Fast-Paced Underdog Fantasy

This is a great zero-to-low-ranked-hero story from a master storyteller who, once again, does not disappoint. It's a great entry point for progression fantasy, with fantastic worldbuilding, a slowly-building magic system, and a likeable and honorable hero who keeps going no matter how many curveballs the universe throws at him.

The audio narration has a bit of a rough start but settles in after a chapter or two. The character depictions are very good, keeping most voices distinct with different personalities. There are two important voices that blend a bit in the third act, but you don't need much effort to keep them apart in your head thanks to how they're written.

The main criticism I have for the narrator is that if you insist on pronouncing brazier as "brah-zeer" rather than the correct "bray-zure" (rhymes with azure), it's going to really change the description. I'm pretty sure Larry Correia did not intend a pivotal fight scene to be illuminated by flaming brassieres.

Other than that, the performance was a solid 4, and the story an easy 5. I can easily recommend this both to an audience that loves progression fantasy and D&D-style worlds, as well as audiences who are looking for an entry point into that particular subgenre. The next book will be out early next year, and I fully expect it to be even better than book one. Larry has a track record with that kind of thing.

Fun beginning

This book is pact full of fun characters. The MC is endearing with his try-hard attitude. Trae stole the show though. He provided a lot of comedic relief. I was expecting more academia but this book is really the origin story of the academia so we may get more in the future. The story was engaging. I finished the book in one sitting. The narration was very well done.
