A Duergar army lies hidden in the depths below the city . . . but Bernt is more worried about finding an affordable rental that accepts demon familiars.

To make things worse, his day job isn't getting any easier. With the Underkeepers promoted to the city guard, Bernt is now on the first line of defense against the growing incursion. The danger is greater than ever . . . but with more risks come even better rewards.

For Jori, his demon familiar, growing in power brings unexpected consequences. As long-buried secrets behind her origins surface, she'll have to outmaneuver the city's Solicitors before they strip away her freedom for good.

Whatever comes, Bernt is up to the challenge and ready to put his first investiture as a mage to the test. The city might consider them expendable, but the Underkeepers are used to being underestimated.

And hey, at least Bernt might finally get his hands on some proper gear . . .

Really enjoyed this book and the previous one. The characters and the politics are well defined and really add to making this world feel real. Really love the wizard Polak (sp?). The guy is just insane enough without being to much.

MC is really good to.Not overpowered and just trying to find his way.

Can't wait for the next book!

Great Characters and Great Story

I looked how the story didn't take forever to finish one scene and enter the next. it was a wonderful and nicely paced story

how easy it was to follow along and picture what was going on in the story

Book 2 is more incremental than incredible.Bernt and his demon sidekick spend a lot of time dealing with factions wanting to cast his sidekick back to demon realm or binding him to an contract limiting the demon's freedom of agency. Besides that, there is a slow progression of enthralled dwarfs again amassing to take over the city for their demon masters. Through it all, there is not a lot of plot progression.

I'll not continue this series.

Lost luster of Book 1
