Publisher's summary

Something is terrorizing the villages of the county. People are dying - covered in blood, their faces frozen in fear. But with not a wound on their bodies.

Battling creatures of the dark is the job of the local spook, but 17-year-old Thomas Ward never finished his apprenticeship. It will be no easy task to earn the trust of the villagers and to defeat a monster that no one has ever seen.

Yet Jenny - a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter - knows an awful lot about this new evil. And she's willing to share what she's learned with Tom…if he takes her on as his apprentice. No girl has ever been a spook's apprentice before. But vanquishing this creature will take Tom and Jenny far from home. And that's exactly what Jenny wants.

This new arc in the legend of Thomas Ward, the hero of the best-selling The Last Apprentice series, begins a dark and sweeping adventure that will chill your very soul.

Good narrator. KEEP HIM!

The narrator in this is good. So don't you DARE keep changing him like wardstone!

wth

this is the most vague book of the entire series. We didn't even get a play by play of the hour long battle? I enjoyed the different character perspectives as always. typically we get more of a climax with some sort of an ending. I'm still a fan though. thank you for the books

Meh

I am a huge Delaney fan. I enjoyed every single one of his books. That being said, the constant change in narration is irratating. Christopher Evan Welch was so phenomenal that his passing has greatly affected my enjoyment of this series. That being said, "Fury" let me down big time with the rushed ending of the great John Gregory by not even explaining his final death scene. That book wasn't about closure (as it should have been) but about launching a new series. I therefore went into this hoping this would infuse new life into the series. It didn't. The cliffhanger ending is horrible. You build up something just to go to notes and a glossary. Very lame. A major letdown. Get a better narrator and stick with them. People get attached to the voices as much as the characters.

A must read but frustrating

Amazing performance and good story. The continuation of Tom ward’s journey as a spook. Only frustrating thing was the inconsistencies of what characters were capable of in the last apprentice series. But, I suppose there wouldn’t be much suspense if the main character got stronger and not weaker as the enemies would not pose as much of a threat. Overall a captivating read, but, not quite as what I thought Tom would develop. Now suddenly, he doesn’t use any of his gifts. There seems to be a determination to keep the enemy as op as possible.

hated the ending

There was no lead up for the ending, seemed very forced. I think the author was tired of writing stories for Tom.

Tremendous

For anyone that had read The Last Apprentice (The Spook's Apprentice) series this is a MUST read. The story is the continuation, of course, and it advances quite naturally with many details coming together gradually. No spoilers here- but expect to be shocked. The performances are wonderful. Overall I loved it!

So much better than the last one!

The narrators did Christopher Evan Welch Justice unlike whoever voiced the last book! So happy I can enjoy listening to the series again!

So off the mark

The wardstone series was my favorite series - until the last book. It has been said hundreds of times at this point, but where a long series should have ended, every main characters that we have been growing to love over the last 10 books were tossed aside, just to write a spin-off. Hoped this spin-off would bring me back in now that I’ve had a year to cool down from my favorite series being ruined, but this first book in the spin-off felt just as rushed as the last series was at the end, and like the author doesn’t care for his own characters. Really disappointing, I started reading this series a decade ago, and it’s heartbreaking to see it treated like this. RIP Christopher Evan Welch, he brought life to the series, but it wasn’t the new narrators that made it bad, that was done by the author, who I used to look up to when I was a young aspiring author

Great book!

Awesome book, good story and great narrators. Lots of engaging moments and there are no parts that are dull or boring that could make you fall asleep...
