Story
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

strong performance, misleading title
This is a weird program, structured exactly like a documentary you might see on television with the exposition and the interviews and the computerized models, but all of this data has been carefully translated into audio. I enjoyed it; it’s interesting without getting too lengthy. The interviews and descriptions are interspersed with calming music. Some of the experts interviewed gave very clear and vivid answers, others didn’t speak as intelligibly (to the layperson), one seemed like an egomaniac. There were several personal tangents, but overall the range of discussion topics (including early mammals, modern descendants of dinosaurs, prehistoric marine life, fossil types, paleontological history, and the mass extinctions) provide the listener with a survey of germane material as well as a fair amount of detail.
Note that this is not really a program that teaches you about various dinosaurs as the title seems to suggest. I also don’t like how the narrator brings up an interesting point and then says, “but we’ll cover that later." While moving along and keeping the listener engaged, the audiobook does cover a variety of dinosaur-adjacent topics, so I don't care for the way the information is organized as much (ymmv, and perhaps I wasn't paying proper attention today). Prof Garrod does a really fine job otherwise; he's an excellent narrator and what the program lacked in a sort of top-down hierarchical organization it almost made up for in flow and pacing.

Fun pop-science summary
I’m probably exactly the audience for this book—I once had to explain sheepishly to another museum visitor in the hall of dinosaurs that no, I didn’t have a six-year-old at home; I was the six-year-old who never grew up and ended up as a science teacher.
This was a great listen that raised my rather low opinion of Audible considerably. The narrator is a biologist, and therefore pronounces terms correctly. Recent (and not-so-recent) research is described clearly and accurately (as far as I could tell; some material dates back only a year or two and I haven’t read the actual sources).
This book is good for helping update somewhat rusty knowledge. I think it would also be good for teens, because it captures the wonder and excitement of science, although I’m not sure whether teens have the background to comprehend the significance of some of the material. For Baby Boomers who might have had a treasured Sinclair Gas toy, but missed developments after elementary school, the certainty of the paradigm shift is going to be mind-blowing. Dinoaves is a fact, and they’ve found the feathers, air sacs, etc to prove it. And the dinosaurs are still more successful than the mammals. Cool stuff.

This was just plain fun to listen to and soak up. The whole family loved every minute of this book as a start to our cross country drive. Great for Grown-Up Dinosaur Fans
A Grown-Up Guide to Dinosaurs is an Audible Original treat for adult dinosaur fans and older kids, too. I was surprised at how much is still being discovered about dinosaurs and their demise. I’m definitely not a scientist, but I loved hearing about the process used by and discoveries made by modern paleontologists. The story ended with an ecological warning for everyone in 2019. Definitely a good listen!

Loved it!
This book was perfect for my adhd because instead of being super science heavy and boring, the author interviewed different doctors, scientists, and paleontologists from around the world. It made it super exciting because each doctor had a particular subject that was their passion, and that really came through and made the book very enjoyable. I wish it was longer!
