才気にあふれ、世話好きな性格は周りの人々を惹きつけ、たくさん悩みながらもよく笑い、よくしゃべる人だったそうです。
そんな芥川は、東京帝国大学に入学した翌年、高校の同級だった久米正雄らと共に第三次「新思潮」を創刊し、小説や翻訳を発表しました。
次いで第四次「新思潮」を創刊の際に掲載した『鼻』が夏目漱石に認められ、文壇に登ることとなりました。
その後新聞社に入社し、記者としてではなく専業作家として意欲的に執筆活動を続けました。
芥川は、漱石や森鴎外から文体や表現の影響を受けたり、キリシタンもの、江戸を舞台にしたものなど題材に応じて文体を変えたりと、意識的な小説の書き方をしていました。
また、鈴木三重吉により創刊された児童雑誌「赤い鳥」には、初となる童話作品『蜘蛛の糸』を発表、その後も同雑誌を中心に童話作品を相次いで発表し、幅広く作品を世に残しています。
野呂松人形を使うから、見に来ないかと云う招待が突然来た。招待してくれたのは、知らない人である。が、文面で、その人が、僕の友人の知人だと云う事がわかった。「K氏も御出の事と存じ候えば」とか何とか、書いてある。Kが、僕の友人である事は云うまでもない。――僕は、ともかくも、招待に応ずる事にした。
野呂松人形と云うものが、どんなものかと云う事は、その日になって、Kの説明を聞くまでは、僕もよく知らなかった。その後、世事談を見ると、のろまは「江戸和泉太夫、芝居に野呂松勘兵衛と云うもの、頭ひらたく色青黒きいやしげなる人形を使う。これをのろま人形と云う。野呂松の略語なり」とある。昔は蔵前の札差とか諸大名の御金御用とかあるいはまたは長袖とかが、楽しみに使ったものだそうだが、今では、これを使う人も数えるほどしかないらしい。
当日、僕は車で、その催しがある日暮里のある人の別荘へ行った。二月の末のある曇った日の夕方である。日の暮には、まだ間があるので、光とも影ともつかない明るさが、往来に漂っている……
