太宰治(本名 津島修治)は、小学校では学校始まって以来富岳百景
の秀才と称されるほど成績優秀で、特に作文に優れ、腕白でいたずらっ子でもありました。
茶目っ気があり、中学校では友人を笑わせては先生に叱られることも多かったそうです。
そしてこの頃から文学作品に親しむようになり、友人らと同人誌「蜃気楼」を創刊、太宰自身も作品を発表しました。
そんな彼が、ノートに何度も名前を書いたり講演会に足を運んだり、格好を真似て写真を撮ったりと深く愛好していた作家に芥川龍之介がいます。
その芥川の死に強い衝撃を受けたことがきっかけで、学業を投げ出し悪遊びをするようになりました。
それから太宰の姿は、今までとは想像もつかないような変貌を遂げていきます。
感受性が強く情緒不安定で、突拍子もない行動を起こし、故に波乱万丈な人生となります。
そうした彼の資質や様々な経験から生み出された小説はとても人間くさく、今でも読む人々を魅了しています。

或るとしの春、私は、生れてはじめて本州北端、津軽半島を凡そ三週間ほどかかつて一周したのであるが、それは、私の三十幾年の生涯に於いて、かなり重要な事件の一つであつた。
私は津軽に生れ、さうして二十年間、津軽に於いて育ちながら、金木、五所川原、青森、弘前、浅虫、大鰐、それだけの町を見ただけで、その他の町村に就いては少しも知るところが無かつたのである……。
太宰治(だざい・おさむ)
津軽の大地主の六男として生まれる。共産主義運動から脱落して遺書のつもりで書いた第一創作集のタイトルは「晩年」(昭和11年)という。この時、太宰は27歳だった。その後太平洋戦争に向う時期から戦争末期までの困難な間も妥協を許さない創作活動を続けた数少ない作家の一人である。戦後「斜陽」(昭和22年)は大きな反響を呼び、若い読者をひきつけた。
