an unsuspecting beautiful read

a debut novel with a beautiful depth and surprising grip on my attention and heart... easily going down as a new favorite YA novel!!

A magical story for everyone

This book is absolutely filled to the brim with wonder and magic. All of the characters felt real and complex. It also felt like the town of Foxfire was a main character, too and felt very much like a real place I could visit.

I really enjoyed watching the characters grow and mature as well as seeing relationships develop as people learned, gained confidence, and became stronger. The monster was fully fleshed out, and although completely rotten through, I could see how he was a person long ago who became a wounded desperate animal clamoring for power in order to survive in the only way he knew how.

I empathized with all of the characters in many ways and at many times for all of their hurts and struggles. In this world conditions are not “fair”, but there is justice. Like in the our own lives, relationships are importance, and it is easier if we ride and work through challenges together, know how and when to pick our battles, and how to enjoy little things in life that we could so easily take for granted, like watching the stars and listening/feeling to the wind. Lastly I loved how there was magic in everything and everyone; it just might look and work differently than we anticipate but still fill us with wonder all the same.

Heartwarming Story and Complex World Building

I cannot wait for a sequel. My Appalachian roots have been blessed with Verity’s magic. Thanks, Don.

Entirely amazing

This book was a flashback to they types of books that got me reading in the first place. the story was rich and well thought out. The characters were multifaceted and experienced growth. There were great references to real life situations as well as other folklore of the world. It was simply amazing and a joy to read!

this book is everything

the story is exciting, the characters endearing and the writing poetic - the culture, history and folklore lovingly woven into what should absolutely become a staple YA Fantasy novel. I predict this becoming a timeless, beloved classic,

Cozy, witchy, oozing with small town charm

I’m obsessed. It is beautifully written and narrated. I just wish it was longer and there were 12 more of them. By the end I was crying like a baby even at the acknowledgments.

Cozy, Ghibli-Coded, Spooky—Just great!

The narration is fantastic in this haunting and special story. I fell in love with the characters and the small, cursed town where they grappled with gloomy (but not-toooooooo-scary) horrors. Great writing, with the author’s singular way of describing things one of the most delicious parts of the book. Trust the buzz; the marketing is accurate. This book is a warm hug (that smells faintly of the forest’s undergrowth).

I'm so in love with this book!

I found myself thinking about this book and talking about this book every day during the week it took to finish it. I cannot wait to see what this author does next. It was so fun and refreshing and emotional. Highly recommend!
