Verity Vox is a witch-in-training who has never met a problem her spells can’t solve. But when a cryptic plea for help sends her to the forgotten coal mining town of Foxfire, she soon learns even magic has its limits.

Verity discovers a curse was laid years ago by a traveling magician who vanished into the ancient Appalachian hills to seek greater power. Crops won’t grow. Bellies go hungry. Even treasured possessions fall apart. What’s worse, people have gone missing amidst rumors that they’ve sought out the magician who is lying in wait for those foolish or desperate enough to strike a deal with him.

The witch must break the curse, find a missing girl, and solve the mystery of what’s really under the mountain before the town falls forever into the clutches of the monster lurking in the hills.

An amazing read!

I LOVED this book. I appreciate the care and thought that were put into so many of the details. My favorite details being those that described witchcraft and how it ties back to the land (and the moon!). The prose and language used in the story are just beautiful. The narrator is FANTASTIC. Her easy cadence made this such an enjoyable read. The only critique, and the reason for docking one star, is because she didn’t pronounce Appalachian correctly at the beginning of the book. I KNOW that may seem silly, but as someone who lives in Appalachia I can attest that we are sensitive and easily riled by this very thing. Otherwise it was a perfect performance.

Cozy, witchy, oozing with small town charm

I’m obsessed. It is beautifully written and narrated. I just wish it was longer and there were 12 more of them. By the end I was crying like a baby even at the acknowledgments.

A magical story for everyone

This book is absolutely filled to the brim with wonder and magic. All of the characters felt real and complex. It also felt like the town of Foxfire was a main character, too and felt very much like a real place I could visit.

I really enjoyed watching the characters grow and mature as well as seeing relationships develop as people learned, gained confidence, and became stronger. The monster was fully fleshed out, and although completely rotten through, I could see how he was a person long ago who became a wounded desperate animal clamoring for power in order to survive in the only way he knew how.

I empathized with all of the characters in many ways and at many times for all of their hurts and struggles. In this world conditions are not “fair”, but there is justice. Like in the our own lives, relationships are importance, and it is easier if we ride and work through challenges together, know how and when to pick our battles, and how to enjoy little things in life that we could so easily take for granted, like watching the stars and listening/feeling to the wind. Lastly I loved how there was magic in everything and everyone; it just might look and work differently than we anticipate but still fill us with wonder all the same.

Small town hardship sprinkled with a little bit of magic

What a well written story. Every detail made the plot amazing. The hardship of a small town was so big it was difficult to accept help from a friend. The author’s acknowledgment at the end of the story was the cherry on top. It brought tears to my eyes.

Witchy and wonderful!

I will definitely be adding this to the list of books I recommend to young readers, and I look forward to my own kids being old enough to enjoy it.
