Resumen del Editor

“For fans who appreciate emotionally wrenching reads such as those by Sarah Jio or Kristin Hannah.” (Library Journal)

“Fans of Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah now have a new go-to author.” (Sally Hepworth, best-selling author of The Secrets of Midwives)

From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.

With her father recently moved to a care facility, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out the family home and is surprised to discover the door to her childhood playroom padlocked. She’s even more shocked at what’s behind it - a hoarder’s mess of her father’s paintings, mounds of discarded papers and miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously tidy house.

As she picks through the clutter, she finds a loose journal entry in what appears to be her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and her siblings grew up believing their mother died in a car accident when they were little more than toddlers, but this note suggests something much darker.

Beth soon pieces together a disturbing portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum depression and a husband who bears little resemblance to the loving father Beth and her siblings know. With a newborn of her own and struggling with motherhood, Beth finds there may be more tying her and her mother together than she ever suspected.

Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's upcoming and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

2 stars

Honestly I really did love the story and the plot but I hated that it felt like Planned Parenthood propaganda. It made the one pro life character out to be an idiot and closed minded at the beginning of his life and then only developed into a good person after he became pro-choice. I really did feel like the book was well written and I enjoyed the plot but will only be giving it a two star rating for the fact that I felt like it was just a long advertisement for Planned Parenthood.

Amazing story!

This book hit home! I suffered from post partum depression and the way they describe it in this book is to the tee. The story itself was beautifully heart wrenching, but I absolutely loved it. I would definitely recommend you read it

Perfect Narration and Interesting Story Line

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio because the narration was absolutely excellent and the novel was very good. I would have rated the novel in itself a five star but I found the first half of the book rather predictable. I am thrilled I held on and finished it because it became very heartfelt and interesting. Plus, it had some surprising twists and each character clearly came across as realistic. very importantly, Rimmer did an excellent job making the listener feel the deep emotions plus the rewards and disappointments that life has to offer.

Soul-wrenching

I was a little afraid to listen to this book, afraid it would be too dark for me. The mystery aspect of the story, just wanting to figure out what happened, kept me listening. Now I reflect on the lives and choices of women a generation before me, and although aspects of our modern life may be difficult, I would never want women to go back to that era. This book may be hard for some to read, but there is redemption and hope.

Started slow but a great story

I couldn’t stop listening to this once things picked up.

The issues of motherhood, stigmas over mental health, birth control access, sexism were as much alive in the 1950s as they were in the 1990s when the story opens up. Not as overt, but still present.

A sad story With a satisfying conclusion

This is a moving and poignant story dealing with post partum depression and women's rights. It is written in 2 voices 1 is a mother in 1957 and the other her daughter in 1997. I enjoyed the voices that read those 2 parts. the story unfolds quietly yet dramatically and is well paced. it shows how far women's rights have come. However it's very sad and especially hard to read for her someone who has dealt with depression themselves such as I have.

Excellent Read

This book began a bit slow and seemed depressing but soon I was totally engaged. This book is a reminder of so few civil rights women had over their own bodies before the 1970’s.

One of my favorite books! Includes honest concerns about women’s mental and reproductive health issues!
