Life was a struggle...

...but she was clever, even without resorting to magic.

Will she embrace her powers?

At 16, Bleak lost the only person she cared for when her mentor died at sea. Now 19, she still misses him terribly. She needs him more than ever. That’s why Bleak drinks. But the haze of the mead and wine has hidden something from her.

Her powers have grown more than she knows.

Others have noticed.

When the king sends his top commander to take her, Bleak is too hungover to resist. But he isn’t the only one who needs her for their plans. What does he want?

In a land where the mist can kill, magic is forbidden, and the powerful plot against each other, Bleak is caught in the middle.

All she wants is a cure for her powers...

...but she’ll need them for what comes next.

Great story and performance

Loved everything about it but I felt that book 4 was a prequel and should have been first. The book ended and then the backstory was told.

This being the first “start over later” I’ve ever listened to/read I was a little put off by it , but it was a PHENOMENAL story all the same!!!

the humanity of the characters

It is a long listen or read, but it is well worth doing.
you get to see the people change for better or worse. Just as in life, there are some that you think are complete heroes turning out to be part villain and vice versa.
The adventures just keep coming, and get better as the story goes along.

Good!

This is a four book series contained within one audiobook. Over 52 hours of listening time!! This certainly provides for plenty of time for deep character development and a story you can really lose yourself in. The full story is contained within the first three volumes. The last volume contains back stories of all the characters who, by now, you have learned to know and love so well. Very enjoyable!!

Gratuitously long ending

The wrap up took FOREVER!!! Too many killed during the final pages. Skip fourth chapter

Enjoyed the Journey & Strong Female Leads

This series was an enjoyable and entertaining pastime, just as it's meant to be :) The storyline is original and complex, the characters too! I definitely loved the woman worriers & would totally read offshoot stories of their adventures too! Narrator was excellent. Thanks for writing a great series for us to enjoy!

Fantastic

I adored this book. I was very hesitant to buy it but I am so happy I did. Grew to know and love all the characters, was very sad when it was finished. No regrets!

“Whut?”

I have many thoughts about this series. Overall, it was worth the listen. Book 2 was the best and was very satisfying and well written. Book 4 seems redundant. It’s the prequel to the other three books. It is good to revisit favorite characters who were doffed during the course of the story, but it’s not cohesive. Rather, it is a collection of vignettes that happened before the series. Almost as if they are scenes that ended up on the editing room floor which were swept up and then strung together. Backstories that flesh out the character development, but it is an afterthought and late to the party.

What I found unbearably irritating was the constant and prolific use of “ What?” in the dialogue. It annoys me when people ask that, in real life, as a response to a statement that was spoken clearly. These characters ask it after nearly every sentence. It serves no purpose and you can tell the narrator was bugged, too. She would deliver the line like she was throwing down gloves.

It’s a long series. The premise is unique and interesting. I really cared for some of the characters and was disappointed when the author leaned on the trick of killing off beloveds in order to illicit emotion. Why do they always want to make readers cry? Rather than allowing elation when everyone survives through especially heroic and powerful acts? To me, that would be more memorable. I don’t like sorrow and pain so I bury the book and move on.

The narrator was the only reason I stayed with it. She was fantastic.
