Alix E. Harrow
From Alix E. Harrow, the New York Times bestselling author of Starling House, comes a moving and genre-defying quest about the lady-knight whose legend built a nation, and the cowardly historian sent back through time to make sure she plays her part–even if it breaks his heart.
Sir Una Everlasting was Dominion’s greatest hero: the orphaned girl who became a knight, who died for queen and country. Her legend lives on in songs and stories, in children’s books and recruiting posters—but her life as it truly happened has been forgotten.
Centuries later, Owen Mallory—failed soldier, struggling scholar—falls in love with the tale of Una Everlasting. Her story takes him to war, to the archives—and then into the past itself. Una and Owen are tangled together in time, bound to retell the same story over and over again, no matter what it costs.
But that story always ends the same way. If they want to rewrite Una’s legend—if they want to tell a different story--they’ll have to rewrite history itself.

In a broad sense, this is the story of the relationship between two people - Sir Una Everlasting and Owen Mallory - that takes place over various time periods where Owen continually experiences Una's death. But that does not really explain it at all. In reality, it is the development of this relationship between the two that begins with two people from completely different backgrounds who have absolutely NOTHING in common, to a love story between two people who will go to the ends of the Earth for each other. In that sense, the book is wonderfully and beautifully written.
Unfortunately, there are other issues with the story that did not let me stay in that perfect place of complete immersion. Without going into spoilers, this book tells us a story that deals with time travel. Quite a bit of time travel. When I say that the main characters are continually going back in time to try to redo everything - that is not an exaggeration. At all. Talk about unlimited attempts at trying again.... But they are not in charge. Hence, the issues.
There is a villain in this story who is quite the bad guy. Where I got frustrated - EXTREMELY frustrated - was with the fact that this villain ALWAYS seemed to have the upper hand. How on Earth - if you already know certain information, and you learn more each and every time - how can you still let this person win? Every. Single. Time. This portrayal seemed to elevate this character to almost godlike abilities. After everything is revealed and after seriously thinking certain issues through, some holes in the storyline began to emerge for me regarding this character.
I understand the need to show the repetitive attempts and retries to set the stage as the world is being built for our characters, but eventually it becomes exhaustive. Again, feeling like the two MC's were just puppets on strings took away from the ultimate beauty of the story that was being painstakingly built.
In the end, I do think this was worth the read. I ended up feeling lots of FEELS and went on quite the emotional rollercoaster with this book. Unfortunately, my levels of frustration ended up impacting me more than I would have liked.
So much potential
